WordPress Wednesday: WP Display Header

Published on Apr 6, 2011   //  WordPress

Want to add some extra personality to your blog? Implementing the WP Display Header WordPress plugin might be an interesting option to consider. It was created by Konstantin Obenland of Germany.

Most blogs have only one header image and this single image appears across all posts and pages. If you have a multi-author blog, however, you might want to have a different header for the posts from each author. Similarly, you might want a different header image for different subject areas.

With this plugin, you have the ability to specify a different header image on each post individually, choosing from your default headers and custom headers. A simple meta box is added to the “post edit” screen. If no custom header is defined, the post will automatically use the default header for your current theme.

As is the norm, you can head over to the WordPress Plugin Directory to download WP Display Header directly. It is currently verified to be compatible with versions up to WordPress 3.1.

Business 101: Should You Have a .Tel Domain?

Published on Apr 5, 2011   //  Business Topics

Most people would agree that any business, regardless of size, should have some sort of presence on the web. In general, it is best to have a website with your own domain and your own hosting, because this helps to legitimize your company in the eyes of consumers.

While there are certainly some smaller businesses that are willing to accept “free” websites under subdomains, this does not give off the same sense of professionalism has having your own domain. That said, some people may be intimidated by the prospect of designing and maintaining a full website.

And that’s where a .tel domain might be worth considering. Unlike conventional top-level domains (TLD), a .tel domain does not need conventional hosting and it is completely operated by Telnic. It comes with a default design that can be filled with basic contact information and other links.

This can prove useful to some businesses, but it should not be your only online presence on the web. The .tel website can be used to house basic contact information, but anything more comprehensive should be handled with a more conventional domain (like .com or .net) with more conventional hosting.

Great Gadgets: Midnight Shot Night Camera

Published on Apr 4, 2011   //  Gadgets

Whether you are considering a digital SLR or a regular point and shoot digital camera, there’s a good chance that you are going to struggle in low light conditions, let alone pitch darkness. That’s where something like the Midnight Shot NV-1 might come into the picture.

This is dubbed a night vision camera, because that is precisely what it has been designed to do. When you are in complete darkness, you can activate the infrared light to effectively grant you night vision. You can even see through certain types of fabrics and other materials with the IR flash.

The infrared lamp is effectively invisible to the naked eye, but it allows the camera to be able to see in the dark. Other noted features include the 5.0 megapixel sensor, 8x digital zoom, shutter speeds as fast as 1/3000th of a second, and SD card slot support. It can only take videos at 640×480 resolution though.

The Midnight Shot NV-1 Night Vision Camera is available now from ThinkGeek for $129.99, which is $20 off the regular price.

Showcase Saturday: Revista Free

Published on Apr 2, 2011   //  Showcase Saturday

You have many different options when it comes to themes for your WordPress blog and many of these also happen to be free. If you like the magazine style layout, then you may be interested in the Revista Free theme.

The design has been made to accommodate regular blogs, as well as news and magazine websites. Among the features are a featured article toward the top of the page with a jQuery slider, as well as pre-determined advertising slots, enhanced drop-down navigation, and embedded social icons.

Fans of all things Apple might also like the OS X inspired header image that also comes included with Revista Free, but you can change that should you so desire too. You’ll also notice the handy 468×60 banner to the right of the header too, which can be used to promote content or house an ad banner.

To get a better sense of what to expect, check out the live preview demo on WP Explorer, which is also where you will find the link to download the Revista Free WordPress theme.

In The Sphere: No Fooling

Published on Apr 1, 2011   //  In the Sphere

Yes, I realize that today is April Fool’s Day and you’ve probably already been bombarded by more than a couple of ruses. So, we’re keeping this roundup straight. Enjoy!

Emily Guy Birken starts us off with a list of ways to easily get free stuff. There’s no better way to save money than not to spend any money at all, right? The best part is that these avenues are totally legitimate.

John Biehler takes a moment to recap the epic roadtrip he took to attend SXSW 2011. Being the photographer than he is, it’s not surprising that John is doing a big part of his recap through pictures. Looks like a great time!

Thursday Bram is tired of it and she can’t take it anymore. She says that the starviing writer mindset has to come to an end. There are many writers who make a very healthy living working from home and it’s time that this myth be busted.

John M. Grohol approaches a very modern conundrum. We think that we are doing more by doing more things at the same time, but are we? He explores how well we multitask between the TV and the computer and, well, we don’t do it very well at all.

Buzz Bishop closes up this week’s roundup by telling us the true value of Twitter: eavesdropping. This isn’t for personal accounts, but for businesses interested in Twitter, brand monitoring is easily one of the most powerful utilities available to marketing managers.
