WordPress Wednesday: Hikari Titled Comments

Published on Mar 17, 2010   //  WordPress

One of the first things that they’ll teach you in journalism school is the importance of having a good title. It doesn’t really matter how good your article is, how much research you put into it, or how insightful it may be if no one reads the piece in the first place. The title is the hook that draws the reader in further.

The same kind of concept applies to blog writing as well, since the post title can act as a great hook to draw someone into your article. What about the comments that the readers leave behind? For people who can’t bother to read each and every comment, a quick summary can be a lot easier to digest. Titled Comments by Hikari approaches this concern.

In short, it allows readers to define a title to the comments that they leave on your blog. This way, they can make a very quick point or provide a short summary of what the rest of the comment may contain. This isn’t as necessary for shorter comments, but anything longer than a couple of sentences can benefit from having an appropriate title of some kind.

To see screenshots of the WordPress plug-in in action, as well as the download link and other information, you can find Titled Comments at Hikari.ws. The plugin can also be found in the official plugin directory on WordPress.org.

Business 101: Who Prepares Your Taxes?

Published on Mar 16, 2010   //  Business Topics

For better or for worse, it’s that time of year again. If you run a small business, one of the questions that you to answer is to determine who will be preparing your income tax return. This is true of simpler returns, like sole proprietorships, or more complex returns, like registered corporations.

If you have a home-based business with very little in terms of complexities, it may be easy enough to complete the tax return on your own. There is software out there, like Ufile Standard Edition that can easily handle self-employment income. Don’t be fooled into buying the “Plus” version of the software, because the Standard Edition can do self-employment income.

For more complex returns where you have to file your corporate taxes as well as a personal income tax return, it is probably in your best interest to hire a certified tax professional. There are many more intricacies and details that come into play with this kind of configuration. Even if you have a sole proprietorship, it may still be worthwhile to hire an accountant. There is an added cost, of course, but for many people, it’s worth it.

What about you? Who prepares your income tax return?

Many laptop computers these days already come with an integrated webcam, but that’s not always true right across the board. If you happen to have a laptop without a webcam, it does not mean that you need to break the bank in order to gain that kind of functionality.

For instance, you can consider something like the Creative Live! Cam Notebook Pro. It’s not the most advanced of webcams on the market, but it is designed to clip onto the top cover of your laptop. This is much more convenient than those that rest on a desk, for instance.

Can you smell that? Spring is right around the corner and you may already be able to smell some of the fresh blooming flowers in your area. If you love nature and want to express this appreciation for the great outdoors via your WordPress blog, a new theme has been developed that lets the outside in.

Appropriately enough, it’s called the Greener Side theme and it features the look of freshly cut grass. Not surprisingly, there is a lot of green in this theme, but it’s also nice to see that the overall layout is quite clean as well. The simple navigation is located near the top and there is a single sidebar to the right of the main content.

A search field is embedded above the main content area to the right, making it easier for your readers to find what they want on your blog. The designer also mentions that the theme is compliant with current CSS and HTML standards, offering the “perfect balance between an awesome design and clutter free content.”

In the Sphere: Lessons, Jobs, and Ramen

The great thing about the blogosphere is the sheer variety of posts that these bloggers can write. No matter what your area of interest, someone is writing about it. Here are some of the best from the past week.

Dumb Little Man starts us off with some amazing life lessons from one Albert Einstein. There is so much more to this great mind than the theory of relativity. For instance, he reminds us of the importance of kissing a pretty girl with the full and undivided attention. Oh, what a romantic.

Hummingbird 604, better known as Raul Pacheco in most circles, loves trying out new and interesting places to eat all around town. In one of his most recent journeys, Raul made his way to The Foundation Lounge on Main Street. The service was prompt and the “BLT-ish” sandwich is a really good deal at just seven bucks, including a side salad.

Starving College Girl Lesley Chang has figured out that one way to avoid starvation is to get a job. She can’t apply for them all, so she has started a new Twitter account dedicated to finding some of the best jobs in Vancouver related to marketing, communications, public relations, writing, and design. Follow @bestjobsinvan on Twitter.

The Urban Muse Susan Johnston takes a moment to consider a very important question: how do you de-stress? It’s important to chase your dreams and achieve your goals, but you also need to take some “me” time to unwind. What do you do to relax? Do you read a book? Play video games? Go for a walk?

Tiny Bites foodie Karen Hamilton made her way down to Downtown Vancouver to try Hokkaido Ramen Santouka. This is a Japanese franchise that recently opened up on Robson Street, competing directly against the likes of Motomachi, Kintaro, and Benkei. All in all, Karen sounds quite pleased with the bowl of noodles she received.
