WordPress Wednesday: Auto Read More Generator

Published on Sep 21, 2011   //  WordPress

There are many different ways that you can go about displaying your blog. Some people like to have the full text visible right from the main page and main archive, much like what you see here on the BlueFur blog. However, for blogs with longer posts, this may not be as appropriate.

Depending on the theme that you are using, there may already be an automatic function to create excerpts, but this may not be the case. That’s why something like the Auto Read More Generator plugin can be so simple and so useful.

It serves a single function. For every post that you publish, it will automatically insert a “read more…” link after the first image and first paragraph. If there is no image, then the “read more…” link will be placed after the first paragraph. This creates the excerpt and streamlines the main page.

You can find the Auto Read More Generator through the WordPress Plugin Directory as normal. And also as normal, this plugin is available as a free download too.

Business 101: Channeling Back to Your Portal

Published on Sep 20, 2011   //  Business Topics

There is absolutely something to be said about maintaining a strong online presence for your company. This could involving maintaining an active Twitter account and an active Facebook page, for example. You may even have a good YouTube channel.

However, you have to build these with a certain set of goals in mind and these goals will oftentimes lend themselves to meaning one thing: channeling those Internet users back to your own portal. In other words, you want to attract people to your website, whether it be a content-based site, an e-commerce site, or what have you.

There are two big take-home messages from this. First, make sure that the URL for your main website is easily visible and accessible across all of your social networking efforts. Most users are not going to be motivated enough to search for your site. Make it easy for them.

Second, make sure that your main website is well designed, well laid out, and properly maintained. There’s no point in channeling users to a site that is not optimized. Consider your goals — making sales, generating leads, building an audience, etc. — and design accordingly.

Great Gadgets: Asus Eee Pad Slider

Published on Sep 19, 2011   //  Gadgets

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer is one of the more popular Android tablets on the market, partly because it comes with an optional keyboard dock that also extends the battery life. Now, another variant from Asus is hitting store shelves by the end of this month.

What you see here is the Asus Eee Pad Slider. Unlike the Transformer where the keyboard and tablet can be separated, the Slider has the keyboard integrated into the whole unit. This makes it slightly thicker and heavier, but it makes for a more unified approach too.

Many of the other features will be largely similar to the Transformer. There is a dual core processor, Android Honeycomb, and an assortment of ports to go along with the 10.1-inch touchscreen display. The 16GB model will ship at the end of this month for $475, while the 32GB model is $575.

That makes it slightly cheaper than the Transformer, since the keyboard and Transformer sold separately would run you about $550 for the 16GB. Some stores are selling it as a combo for $500, but that would still be $25 more than the equivalent Slider.

We here at BlueFur encourage a high level of creativity and we understand that inspiration can come from any number of different sources. That’s why we are proud to be the online home of the websites of so many talented artists, one of whom is Mark Margerison of Highlight Studio.

Currently based out of Terrace, British Columbia in Canada, Mark has been “holding a camera since the age of 9.” He has always been interested in capturing these moments in time and he has now developed that into a business. His photography services range from weddings to sports, scenery to picture framing.

If you take a moment to check out his photo galleries, you’ll get a good sense of the basic artistic style that Mark brings to the table (and to the lens). His portfolio includes many wildlife pictures, as well as people and stunning scenery.

Showcase Saturday: Brand New Day

Published on Sep 17, 2011   //  Showcase Saturday

Don’t you wish you could have an easy way to have fundamentally the same design and layout for your WordPress theme, but to also have the ability to make huge aesthetic changes in the click of a mouse? The Brand New Day theme might be the ticket.

While this is a single theme that you only need to upload and install once, it comes in four different “flavors” depending on what you want to do. These include day, night, autumn and winter. You can see how this would be great for changing things up as the seasons progress throughout the year.

The theme will change some of its graphics and color scheme to go along with each of the flavors. You’ll also find lots of options for configuring your sidebar arrangements, as well as working out narrow and wide columns. The them is fun and whimsical, making it great for a lighter-hearted blog.

Check out the screenshots at CalobeeDoodles.com. There is also a live demo and the free download link at WordPress.org, as usual.

In The Sphere: Luck and Success

Published on Sep 16, 2011   //  In the Sphere

What’s going on with bloggers around the web? Let’s see what they have to say this week.

Tanya Davis starts out with her gratitude list. She is thankful for a supportive husband, her many new friends in Calgary, and the many opportunities she has to grow in her field. What are you grateful for?

Michael Kwan takes a look at how to know when to quit your day job. Many people want to pursue their own businesses, but they’re not quite sure when to take that leap of faith and abandon the usual 9-to-5 routine.

John Bardinelli chimes in with his two cents on Phone Story, the iPhone game that got pulled from the App Store due to “objectionable content.” He says that if the game was never pulled, it would not have received the attention that it did, even if it admonishes our love for the latest smartphone.

Neil Patel is a successful Internet entrepreneur, but he recognizes there’s more to success than good ideas and hard work. You have to dress the part too. He found that as he dressed better, he was better respected and better able to get a higher ROI on his fashion investments.

Amanda Hackwith finishes off this week’s collecting by approaching LinkedIn and assessing its value as a way to attract new clients. Of the 120 million members of LinkedIn, nearly one million use “freelance” in their job title and over 8 million cite themselves as an “owner” of their current business.
