Social Media 101 – YouTube

Published on Jul 25, 2009   //  Social Media

socialmedia1011YouTube is a different world then twitter. These two social sites have different rules and different ways to behave. Youtube has a similar follow feature like twitter but they break it down in to Friends and Subscribers. Friends are people you can send messages to but is not shown up as a status thing on your profile. Subscribers on the other hand are shown as a badge of how many people subscribe.

Like all social sites fill in your profile, set an avatar and set your background.

Once you have started creating video’s be sure to give them all tags, descriptions and if you have the knowledge make an intro video to your movies.

I have gained over 300 subscribers on YouTube which may not seem like much but that has taken awhile to do.

The key to getting subscribers which I have found is to post often on one topic. Your account should be like a TV channel where you talk about one subject or related subjects. Then comment on others that interest you in a smiliar subject as yours. Rinse, lather and repeat er I mean record, upload and repeat.

What tips and tricks have you found to getting subscribers on YouTube?

Social Media 101 – 12seconds.tv

socialmedia1011Video was being pushed as the next big coming of twitter and the leader in the pack in my opinion is 12seconds.tv. This site is a great way to record a small 12 second video to update your status.

TweetDeck will play 12seconds.tv video updates.

Like using pictures on twitpic a video can add so much more to what it is your trying to say. With 12 seconds you have to learn to be pithy and get your point across right away.

I think the problem with 12seconds.tv is that YouTube and others like them already have a large market share and people would rather upload a small quick video to youtube then to another service.

Here is a fun one my daughter and I did awhile ago.

Have you used 12seconds.tv? What did you think?

Social Media 101 – April Fools

Published on Jul 25, 2009   //  Social Media

socialmedia1011If you were on twitter on April Fools it was a fun time for most. This year was memorable because someone came out with a joke about pro accounts. They created a site where you entered in your username and it spit out a pro icon on top of your avatar for you to upload.

People all over twitter added and if you se anyone with a pro icon on there avtar you might want to let them know it was an April Fools joke.

You can see details of the joke here and what the pro icon looked like.

Also this year the Rickrolling phenomena was at an all time high.

It will be interesting to see what happens next year.

Do you plan for these type of events?

Social Media 101 – Twitter Verified

socialmedia1011Did you know that twitter has started a verified by twitter for stars and businesses? This service started awhile ago and as per there site…

To prevent identity confusion, Twitter is experimenting (beta testing) with a ‘Verified Account’ feature. We’re working to establish authenticity with people who deal with impersonation or identity confusion on a regular basis. Accounts with a Verified are the real thing!

Can just anyone get it?

Twitter’s response to this is…

We’re starting with well-known accounts that have had problems with impersonation or identity confusion. (For example, well-known artists, athletes, actors, public officials, and public agencies). We may verify more accounts in the future, but because of the cost and time required, we’re only testing this feature with a small set of folks for the time being. As the test progresses we may be able to expand this test to more accounts over the next several months.

They aren’t taking any new requests at this time but if you want you can be put on a list.

What do you think of this feature?

Social Media 101 – Twitter Coupons

Published on Jul 25, 2009   //  Social Media

socialmedia1011As twitter grows in age there are some new and interesting sites and servieces that are emerging. I tested out with out much succcess using twtQpon. This is a site that allows you to setup a social media coupon and distribute it.

To get started create a twitter coupon.

Once you are approved you will be able to start promoting your twitter coupons.

Sites I have not tested are…

Coupons can be a great way for you to promote your business through social media. Just be careful with this. You will want to compete on service or quality not on price if your in business.

Have you tested these? Did you have any sucess with them?

Social Media 101 – Google Killer

Published on Jul 25, 2009   //  Social Media

socialmedia1011Do know what keeps a 5000 lbs gorilla awake at night? 10 million users all talking together. I know it’s a bad analogy but funny enough it is true. I predict that twitter will be a Google killer for local search as that becomes more and more relevant as to why people use the Internet.

Google results use to be great because we didn’t understand the algorithm so they produced great results. Then we all got smart and used Google to find the answer to game their system. Now the results are kind of weird and not always relevant.

Let’s try an example…

What is the best sushi in surrey?

Google Results

Funny how the first one understood the right location but is a German information site that spelled Canada with a K. That site is just a listing of sushi restaurants.

The next one is a dead link and then more listing of local sushi restaurants.

If I asked this on twitter I am sure I would get a lot of replies especially from people I trust on the Internet.

Did you know that Google Searches are down in North America? Ask twitter where they are searching for those answers now. I bet you they know!
