Showcase Saturday: Industrial Theme

Published on Jul 2, 2011   //  Showcase Saturday

WordPress themes can take on many forms to approach many different genres and audiences. You can get more floral themes for a more feminine touch, just as you can have bright and cheery colors for a more energetic feel.

If you’re looking for something a little more masculine in approach, the new Industrial Theme for WordPress could be a good fit. Not surprisingly, it makes use of a more industrial color scheme, including various shades of grey, possibly emulating the look and feel of steel and other metals. The text is equally powerful and utilitarian.

The core design includes two columns; the sidebar is located to the left, while the main content area is located to the right. Each post is shaded into its own gray box and each post title is equally given the same level of separation and impact. Key navigational links are placed above the header for easy access.

Head on over to Empty Nest Themes to check out a screenshot of Industrial Theme. It is also there that you can download this theme for free.

Showcase Saturday: Vintage Spring

Published on Jun 25, 2011   //  Showcase Saturday

WordPress is an incredibly versatile and robust content management system. You can use it as the backbone to your company’s corporate site, just as much as you can use it as an e-commerce platform or for the place where you have your personal blog. Fitting best into this last option is the new Vintage Spring theme.

Lending itself to more feminine tones, Vintage Spring is a floral based theme that isn’t too heavy on the color. Instead, it makes use of more muted pinks and subdued browns to provide a more “vintage” feel. You’ll also notice that there is some transparency to the main body area, allowing you to see the floral background image beneath it.

Vintage Spring is a three column theme, placing the main content in the center, and flanking it on either side with a customizable sidebar. You can use these sidebars for search, category listings, useful links, advertising, menu items, and more. There is also a stripe above the header for additional navigation.

Go to Empty Nest Themes to view a full-resolution screenshot of Vintage Spring in action. It is also there that you will find the download link for this GPL licensed WordPress theme.

Showcase Saturday: My Corporation

Published on Jun 18, 2011   //  Showcase Saturday

Do you want a professional looking website for your company but you can’t afford to hire a professional designer to create something custom for you? The aptly named My Corporation WordPress theme could be a suitable alternative.

As its name implies, this theme was largely designed with the business owner in mind. This could work for solopreneurs, as well as small business owners or even larger corporations. It can also be very effective as a portfolio site for freelancers, artists, and other similar professionals.

Some key features include the “slider” near the top of the page, which will automatically transition between different images and different links. These can be used to highlight certain products, company announcements, or major selling points. Below that are spaces for images and text for whatever else you want to showcase. Again, this is good for selling points or product categories.

You’ll also notice the drop-down menus at the top, many different custom post types, custom font, valid xHTML strict code, and fast loading times. Find more information at WP Explorer, which is also where you can download it for free with a GPL license.

Showcase Saturday: Portfolio Press Theme

Published on Jun 11, 2011   //  Showcase Saturday

WordPress may be most commonly used as the platform for a conventional blog, but it can also be utilized for a range of different kinds of websites too. If you are a graphic designer, photographer, or otherwise engaged in the creative arts, then the Portfolio Press theme for WordPress sounds like it is up your alley.

Rather than having a post thumbnail image followed by a snippet of text for each post, you get a grid-based pattern of squares, each with a unique image. This theme is a great way of showcasing your design and creative work, as it gives visitors to your side an “at a glance” look at some of your most recent work.

Using the options panel, you can further customize the look and feel of theme by updating the logos and changing the layout. A video screencast for setting up Portfolio Press can be found on WP Theming, which is also the site of the theme’s developer. It is also on that page that you’ll find a fairly extensive FAQ, in case you have any questions about how the theme works.

After that, you can head over to the Free Themes Directory on WordPress.org to view a live demo of Portfolio Press, as well as access the free download link for the WordPress theme.

Showcase Saturday: Lefty Free Theme

Published on Jun 4, 2011   //  Showcase Saturday

Are you looking for a snazzy new WordPress theme, but you still want to have a relatively clean look to your site? One possible solution is the Lefty WordPress Theme by AJ Clarke.

As its name implies, the theme is designed to have a left-aligned sidebar, along with one main content column that takes up the remaining two-thirds of the horizontal real estate. Some of the key features include the built-in post thumbnail function, about the author sections, “tweet” and “like” buttons for posts, and custom fonts via Google Fonts.

Easily one of the biggest features that will immediately catch your eye, however, is the NivoSlider. This automatically cycles through the main images associated with posts within a category that you define. You can also choose from a number of different transitions for these images too. The resulting images at the top of the site are naturally links back to their respective posts.

To get the best sense of what to expect from Lefty WordPress Theme, check out the live demo. You can then go to WPExplorer to download the theme. It comes with a free GPL license.

Published on May 28, 2011   //  Showcase Saturday

There are all sorts of different WordPress themes to suit all sorts of different types of websites. For people who would rather abstain from themes that look too modern or futuristic, a possible solution is the Retro-Fitted theme. As its name implies, this theme definitely caters toward those who would like more of a retro feel.

That’s not to say that this theme is lacking in any of the most current features that you can find with other WordPress themes. It actually boasts a very clean and easy-to-follow design that would work with any number of different niches, industries, and topic areas. The visuals appeal to the eye.

Along the top of the theme is the name of the site, along with its tagline, and next to that is the usual WordPress navigation menu. The theme supports many different widget areas and it allows for per-post layouts as well. The theme can be configured to have one, two, or three columns, depending on your preferences.

Check out the page on Theme Hybrid for more information on Retro-fitted, as that is the site of the theme’s designer. It is there that you can download and demo the theme, but you can also download it through the WordPress Theme Directory too.
