Showcase Saturday: Toolbox Theme

Published on Aug 13, 2011   //  Showcase Saturday

WordPress is a remarkably versatile platform that can be used to power all sorts of different sites. Because the content is separate from the layout, you can apply a range of different themes without having to rewrite your actual content. That said, you might not be able to find exactly the theme that you want.

While you could certainly hire a designer and a coder to make a custom creation for you, you may also consider using the Toolbox theme as a starting point. That’s because this WordPress theme has been designed specifically to work as a basic template for your own customizations. This way, you’re not coding from scratch.

Toolbox could be used the way that it is, but you’ll likely be making many different changes to suit your particular needs and preferences. All along the way, you can rest assured that you are starting with super clean code with an ultra-minimalist origin. Where you take it from there is completely up to you.

You can find Toolbox in the Free Themes Directory as a free download.

Showcase Saturday: Fliphoto Photoblog Theme

Published on Aug 6, 2011   //  Showcase Saturday

The great thing about WordPress is that it can be used as the platform for so many different sites. We’ve seen themes that are great for business sites, blogs, and even e-commerce stores. Now, let’s look at Fliphoto theme, which is designed largely for photo blogs.

The design itself is quite clean and simple, but it is remarkably robust in its feature set too. You get the main header image at the top, of course, while the main content area is divided up to show six very large thumbnail images that can then link out. Interestingly, each also has a “more info” link that animates the panel, flipping it over to reveal more information about that post. That’s very slick!

The thumbnail images are automatically resized within WordPress, so as an avid photographer or graphic designer, you don’t need to resize your images to suit the blog’s dimensions. Other nice features include the widget-friendly footer, no need for a plugin to get related posts, and integration with various social bookmarking networks.

Showcase Saturday: Icy Night

Published on Jul 30, 2011   //  Showcase Saturday

Would you like a WordPress theme that screams out with a little more personality without being too in your face? The Icy Night theme could prove to be a great fit.

The idea behind this theme is to offer “vibrant, loud, bright colors” that are cohesive and smooth. The net result is a largely black and blue darkened background for the white text and core content. The use of transparencies works quite well too.

Icy Night is available in both two column and three column configurations. In both instances, the sidebars are placed toward the right side of the theme, while the main content column is aligned to the left side. There is also a series of navigation links toward the top, just underneath the header text.

Go to EmptyNestThemes.com to find screenshots of both the 2-column and the 3-column variants of Icy Night. This WordPress theme is a free download, so feel free to use it with any number of your WordPress sites and blogs.

Showcase Saturday: Minimatica

WordPress provides an amazing framework that can then be used to power a wide range of different kinds of websites. One of the creative themes to come around in a while is called Minimatica.

What’s interesting about this single theme is that it actually provides two different view styles. The more visually stunning of the two is a beautiful image gallery slider. There are four images being displayed, but when the visitor hovers his or her mouse over one of them, it expands to take up more space and provide a snippet from the associated post.

Alternatively, there is also the optional blog view. This is more standard in its approach, but it still works very much to focus on the visual. The main image is shown in a panoramic-like dimension with the post title and excerpt below it. Other features include audio and video playback, post thumbnails, and more.

Find more information about Minimatica at OneDesigns.com. The free download link can be found on that page. A live demo of the theme has also been made available.

Showcase Saturday: GreenLeaf Theme

Keep it simple, elegant, and dignified. If you’re looking for a WordPress theme that gives that kind of feel, you may be interested in the new GreenLeaf Theme. The lighter tones are great for environmentally-geared blogs and websites.

The default configuration and layout for this theme is in three columns. It’s similar in scope to a magazine style layout, using the same kind of general design style as the Paper.li e-magazines that people send out through Twitter. Of course, the difference is that it only features your own blog posts.

Above the three columns of content is a header area, navigation area, search bar, and an area for a main message or image. The theme also comes with an easy to use Theme Options page, custom Twitter feed widget, custom pagination, and a hierarchical structure for categories.

Check out the live demo and then continue to Free Theme for WP to access the download link for GreenLeaf Theme.
