Anyone that owns a business should consider this book a must read. This book provides easy reading and chalked full of excellent business guidelines. The majority of business owners get stuck working in there business and those that do grow big enough end up not being effective managers. This book explains that the owners of businesses should be working on there business instead of in there business. Even if working on your business is a small amount of time set a  side once a day or week. Reading through this book I see a lot of local businesses that have the exact same issues as the owners in this book. Note this book although called E-Myth has nothing to do with an online business at all the topics in the book are generic and cover all businesses.

The title of this book caught my eye when I was looking over marketing books at thelocal Chapters. After reading this book I would suggest that if you have an interest in Marketing this is an excellent read. The book gives examples and suggestions on creating unique marketing ideas for your business.

The key to marketing from the Authors perspective is finding something that makes you stand out from the others. Finding your own purple cow can be a hard process but the book does spark ideas for you to think about with your own site or business.

Handy Backup Review

Handy Backup

I am sure we have all heard it before, a friends hard drive crashed and all the files they had are now gone. You think wow that must really suck but of course that would never happen to my own machine. Well a hard drive will eventually crash it is not a question of if but more a question of when.

Thinking more about this I decided to review some of the many off site backup software. From the various solutions out there I found Handy Backup to be very easy to setup and use. The tool takes less then 3 minutes to setup for the essential files I need to backup. For me that was everything in My Documents folder and my Outlook .PST file.

I also like how there is an option to compress the files and encrypt them so that if you have secure details in those files you do not have to worry about someone getting into your files that should not. I also selected it to do an incremental backup, which means that it will only update the newest files which means the process will be that much quicker each night.

This tool makes using your space that you purchased for hosting more effective if you do not require the entire space for your site. Handy Backup has a 30 day trial version you can try for free. I suggest you test it out and save yourself a lot of grief the day your own hard drive fails.

crazy egg

I stumbled upon a new web stat service called Crazy Egg that provides you with a visual representation of your site visitors. It gives you a better idea of the behaviour of your site visitors. Crazy Egg allows you to try new designs and understand what placement works better. Crazy Egg will track where on your website your visitors are clicking. With this detailed information you can decided how to better layout your site to accomplish your site goals.

Crazy Egg has four different plans to choose from ranging from free up to $99 per month. The free version allows you to track up to 5000 visitors per month. The stats are updated hourly.

There are also 3 views you can choose from to review the information.

The overlay view provides details on each element of your site. It shows how many clicks and where those clicks were made. Each element that is clicked on is given a dot. The dots are colour coded for yellow to red. The lighter the dot the fewer the clicks. You can hoover over the dots and it will tell you exactly how many clicks or click on the dot and it will open to show you a percentage.

The list views provides a full summary of the raw click details. You can see the most popular links on your site. See what type of element it is and the percentage of the clicks.

The heat map view allows you to see what is hot or not on your site. This gives you a general idea of where on your page people are clicking.

The information you can see from Crazy Egg is valuable when you sell something online. It lets you see the behaviour of your customers and tweak how your layout is to maximize your sales. I suggest you sign up for a free account at Crazy Egg and test it yourself.
