In The Sphere: All About Google Plus

Published on Jul 8, 2011   //  In the Sphere

The revolution has begun. While Wave and Buzz didn’t quite catch on, Google+ (also known as Google Plus or G+) is really creating quite the stir in social media circles. Let’s see what the bloggers have to say about it.

Darren Barefoot starts off by asking how Google can finally win with Google+. While part of it may have to do with improved security, it’s the integrated pervasiveness with other Google products that could give Google+ the leg-up it needs. Will it catch on and stick around?

Michael Martine is next up with a very simple question: Should you use Google+? We’re already inundated with maintaining our accounts on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and so on, so should we really be adding yet another social network into the mix? Or perhaps you should delete your Facebook account and migrate completely?

Deborah Ng gets you off to a great start on the new platform by offering 10 Google+ tips. You’ll want to take advantage of your circles, check out the apps, and “mute” the posts you don’t want to see. Updating your privacy settings are a very good idea too.

Chris Brogan continues with improving your Google+ experience by reminding you that conversations matter. This isn’t only for the human connections that can gain and foster, but also because Google+ gives more “weight” to the updates with more activity. You want to be seen, right?

Ray Ebersole ends this weeks blogotour by expanding the scope just a little. He has some pointers for using Google’s new minimalist look. This includes Google+, but it also involves the new looks for Gmail and Google Calendar as well. What do you think about having all that extra white space?

In The Sphere: Happy Canada Day

Published on Jul 1, 2011   //  In the Sphere

Happy 144th birthday, Canada! Let’s celebrate by taking a quick tour of the blogosphere for some good reading.

John Biehler spent last weekend at Vancouver Mini Maker Faire 2011. This gathering of DIY enthusiasts features a marketplace, carnival atmosphere, and more. While there, he checks out a ridable walking spider, laser-cutting demos, and a self-made 3D printer. You are limited only by your imagination and your drive to finish what you start.

Bob Buskirk has always had trouble falling asleep every night, oftentimes wasting up to two hours rolling around in bed. That’s why he has started out a plan to hack his sleep for a better night’s rest. This includes having a pre-bed snack, taking a cold shower, and giving himself some relaxation time before bed.

Tanya Desrosiers gives us another weight loss update. She’s been working hard at this endeavor and is reaping some serious rewards. In fact, since she started on this journey in December, she’s lost an impressive 35 pounds! She says that she has about 10-15 pounds to go. I know she can do it!

James Chartrand is taking a different approach to life, agreeing with Kevin O’Leary of Dragons’ Den: “Money rules my life, and I’m okay with it.” If you want to make a lot of money and you think that having all this money will make you happy, then you have to be okay with that kind of perspective and you have to go about it without feeling guilty along the way.

Derek Semmler finishes off this week’s collection with a fantastic announcement: he has published a book. Available in digital format through Amazon Kindle, his book offers “45 ways to be the dad that your kids need.” This is just in time for the summer when the kids are out of school and need their parents more than ever!

In The Sphere: What an Ordeal

Published on Jun 24, 2011   //  In the Sphere

Every week, we take a look at five different blog posts that caught our eye in the previous week. Here is this week’s collection.

Gus Fosarolli starts us off with a less than pleasant travel story. Thanks largely to the ongoing strike action at Air Canada, Gus had to go through quite the ordeal to finally make his way to Prague. He dealt with delays, lost luggage, and missed connections. That’s not how you want to start a vacation.

Annabelle is next with her list of five habits everyone should break. I don’t smoke myself, and I don’t think I go about wasting my money, but I am certainly guilty of comparing myself to others and always sweating the small stuff. We could all be better at what we do.

Mark Nichol recognizes that English is anything but a uniform language. There are differences between Australia and Canada, just as there are differences between Austin and Seattle. That’s why you need to know your regional vocabulary when you are writing on the web. You wouldn’t want to be misunderstood.

Enkay Blog has witnessed the end of an era. Web properties come and go all the time and now we are bidding adieu to another. MyBlogLog has disappeared. In the face of more prominent social networks and their ability to form different groups, the value of MyBlogLog has diminished and people aren’t using it nearly as much.

Leo Babauta has always been about minimalism. He has always been about keeping things as simple and straightforward as possible. That’s why he always tries to pack light when travelling, but we all run into the just in case syndrome where we start to pack just about everything “just in case” we need it. Leo thinks we should kick that habit.

In The Sphere: First Business Card

Published on Jun 17, 2011   //  In the Sphere

There’s always something new and interesting to read in the blogosphere. Here are some posts that caught our eye this week.

Darren Barefoot takes us for a stroll down memory lane, proudly displaying his first business card. It was for a high school production way back in 1991, clearly demonstrating how far the “socially-awkward 17-year-old” has evolved since then.

Tyler Cruz gives us his first update on the weight loss challenge he’s participating in with Paul Piotrowski. Thus far, Tyler has the upper hand, but he still has quite a way to go to reach his goal of losing 30 pounds. The good news is that Tyler has adopted healthier dining choices than his competitor.

Rebecca Bollwitt may now live in Vancouver proper, but she grew up in Surrey. As such, she’s proud to showcase the summer festivals set to take place in Surrey this year. From Park Play Palooza to Surrey Fusion Festival, there’s a lot of fun to be had.

Betshopboy decided to take some time off with his family recently, making their way over to Sunway Lagoon. This is a massive theme park located in Kuala Lumpur, featuring interesting water rides, a huge shopping mall, five different themed parks, and the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge. He has lots of photos, so check those out.

Bevan Bird finishes off this week’s collection with a post asking, “Why won’t small biz go social?” Small businesses need to realize and capitalize on the potential offered by social media, a platform that is largely free to use and can provide huge returns. They just have to learn how to use it well.

In The Sphere: Deliver the Spot Prawn

Published on Jun 10, 2011   //  In the Sphere

There is always something new to read on the web, so we’ve sifted through to find some great posts to add to your list for the weekend.

Robert Park takes us on a journey through the past, describing the startups he didn’t deliver. All too often, we hear about the success stories of new companies; now, let’s take a look at the flip side and see why these startups failed to launch (and what Robert learned along the way).

Thursday Bram has a post on MoneyNing that’s just in time for all those summer barbecues you plan on hosting. Check out her tips on how to save money on parties without resorting the usual potluck scenario. What about an event without food?

Enkay Blog continues on the food theme with his take on the Epic Meal Time YouTube series. What happens when a guy that’s a little too enthusiastic about adding more bacon, more bacon, and more bacon documents his gastronomic endeavors for all to see? Epicness, that’s what.

Jan Ozer is a guest expert on Reel SEO and he offers the perfect segway from the Epic Meal Time post: the most important aspect to video quality online is your bits per pixel value. It’s not necessarily about resolution or framerate, per se, but rather a combination of the two along with the amount of data dedicated to each second of video.

Last and certainly not least we have Melody Fury celebrating a special BC delicacy around this time of year. She lets us know about the joys of sucking on the heads of spot prawns and freezing the bodies. Not too many people are interested in the heads, but are they missing out?

In The Sphere: A Working Vacation

Published on Jun 3, 2011   //  In the Sphere

Every week, we take a look at some great blog posts on sites other than our own. Here is this week’s stroll through the blogosphere.

The Urban Muse opens up a discussion about whether or not you have a smartphone. It’s a great tool, to be sure, but is having a smartphone really necessary to be successful as a small business owner? Or is having a regular cell phone sufficient? Is it expected that you can check your e-mail at any minute of the day?

Gretchen Rubin has some great advice for people who are always late arriving at where they need to be. Check out her seven tips to be on time more often. Don’t try to get “one last thing” done before heading out! This is one of the most common causes of tardiness, as we always underestimate the time of that one more thing.

Jennifer Mattern offers an interesting proposition for freelancers who are overwhelmed with client work: try a working vacation. As far as your clients are involved, you’re on vacation, but you spend this time to work on your own projects.

Raul Pacheco takes us on a brief tour of the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre. Ironically enough, though, it’s not in Squamish; it’s actually closer to the Upper Village in Whistler. There are some great artifacts in there from both the Squamish Nation and Lil’wat Nation.

Justin Germino, who you may know better as Dragon Blogger, is a pretty big fan of Jack Black. As such, it should come as little surprise that his review of Kung Fu Panda 2 leans toward the positive. Have you watched this sequel yet? What did you think?
