Great Gadgets: Mini Car DVR System

Published on Jul 25, 2011   //  Gadgets

Most jurisdictions have some sort of cell phone ban when it comes to driving your car. These usually extend to you using a camera while behind the wheel too, so how can you get the kind of video documentation that you desire?

One possible option is the Mini Car DVR. The CVSB-DC43 comes equipped with a small, but perfectly usable 2-inch screen, along with 24 powerful IR LEDs. This allows you to record both in daylight and under the cover of night.

As you can see in the picture above, the Mini Car DVR can easily attach to your car’s windshield or dashboard with the suction cup. This can be useful in case you get into a fender-bender, but you can also use the motion detection feature to deter would-be thieves too!

Find more information about this useful product at Chinavision, which is where you’ll be able to order one of your own. A single unit is about $60, but the price goes down as you increase the size of your order.

Showcase Saturday: Minimatica

Published on Jul 23, 2011   //  Showcase Saturday

WordPress provides an amazing framework that can then be used to power a wide range of different kinds of websites. One of the creative themes to come around in a while is called Minimatica.

What’s interesting about this single theme is that it actually provides two different view styles. The more visually stunning of the two is a beautiful image gallery slider. There are four images being displayed, but when the visitor hovers his or her mouse over one of them, it expands to take up more space and provide a snippet from the associated post.

Alternatively, there is also the optional blog view. This is more standard in its approach, but it still works very much to focus on the visual. The main image is shown in a panoramic-like dimension with the post title and excerpt below it. Other features include audio and video playback, post thumbnails, and more.

Find more information about Minimatica at OneDesigns.com. The free download link can be found on that page. A live demo of the theme has also been made available.

In The Sphere: Happiness and Relaxation

Published on Jul 22, 2011   //  In the Sphere

What’s new on the Internet? Let’s have a look at what bloggers have had to say this week.

Courtney Carver starts us off with a great story on the the secret to happiness. It starts with a young boy seeking the wisdom of a saintly man, but the lesson that he takes home we can all take to heart. Will you spill the drops of oil?

Free Money Finance approaches a very serious subject by listing 25 documents you need before you die. It’s not a topic that very many people want to explore, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a topic you should avoid. Do you have a copy of the “qualified domestic-relations order” or a list of all the safe-deposit boxes that you own?

Damien Riley may seem like a pretty easygoing guy, but he gets his share of stress too. That’s why he has found a few different relaxation methods that you may want to try throughout your day. From fake smiles to yoga lite, they can actually prove to be quite effective. Even deep breathing can help calm the nerves.

Jon Lee has some advice for all the webmasters out there, offering five quick ways to improve web site design. This applies to everyone from bloggers to small business owners. Improve your navigation, make your message clear, and avoid having too many links.

Jay Piddy has a deal for everyone in the Greater Vancouver area. If you want a fuel efficient car to boot around the city, you may want to consider Jay’s 2004 Toyota Echo RS. They’ve outgrown their little car and it’s time to pass it on to someone else. It’s fully loaded and looks to be in great condition.

Marketing 101: The Dormant Twitter Account

Published on Jul 21, 2011   //  Marketing Tips

Listen to any number of different Internet marketing experts and they’ll tell you that if you want your business to have a strong brand presence online, it needs to tap into the social networks. However, what if you don’t have the time, expertise, or motivation to do so?

We see this all too often. Catch the trend before it passes you by. If you don’t take advantage now, you’re going to miss a huge opportunity. As such, so many companies set up their Twitter accounts and Facebook pages, only to leave them dormant for months on end.

That’s not social at all and that kind of inactivity simply does not belong in the social media sphere. Yes, it is absolutely true that Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and even Google+ offer huge marketing opportunities that are free to use. However, creating an account and not using it is ultimately worse than not having an account at all.

Before you consider tapping into the various social networks on the Internet, ask yourself if you have either the time to give it the attention it deserves or the funds to outsource the work to a freelancer or contractor.

WordPress Wednesday: UI Labs

Published on Jul 20, 2011   //  WordPress

There are all sorts of different plugins that can customize WordPress to suit your particular needs and preferences. Some change the reader side of things, while others change the admin side. This plugin falls into the latter category.

Called UI Labs, this free WordPress plugin “offers experimental admin UI features” that are supposed to enhance the default experience. I imagine that new features will be added to UI Labs as new versions are released.

There are two features as of version 1.1.1. The first is the addition of color-coded post statuses. Basically, this will color codes the tags in your post listing that tell you whether a post is a draft, a sticky, pending, private, and so on. This makes it easier to see the difference at a glance. The second feature is a slightly altered WordPress 3.2 admin header.

Head on over to the WordPress Plugin Directory to read the brief writeup on these “unofficial core UI experiments.” It’s also there that you’ll get a couple of screenshots and the download link.
