WordPress Wednesday: Social Crowd

Published on May 25, 2011   //  WordPress

The Internet is an increasingly social place. You may already have a website of some kind or another, but it’s also important to have a strong brand presence on the major social networks too. How, then, can you combine these two different sets of efforts for the best possible case of synergy?

Well, you might want to think about implementing Social Crowd on your WordPress site. This plugin will automatically pull the latest counts from your favorite social networks, displaying these numbers proudly on your blog. This can help to encourage visitors to your site to also check out your social profiles and “like” or “follow” them accordingly.

For now, the plugin supports Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Vimeo and Feedburner. Each of these can be displayed, with the appropriate identifying icon, as a simple widget in the sidebar of your site. The numbers themselves are not stylized with the plugin, so you can adjust their look and feel to suit the styling of your site.

If there is a social network, like LinkedIn or Foursquare, that you feel should be included, you can leave a note on the developer’s site. That is also where you can see screenshots of Social Crowd (both of the control panel and the widget), as well as download the plugin for your own use.

Business 101: Post-Dated Account Changes

Published on May 24, 2011   //  Business Topics

Moving to a new place can be both one of the most exciting times in your life and one of the most nerve-wracking. Part of the process involves updating your contact information with the many accounts that you have with different companies and institutions. You need to move your cable TV service. You need to update your credit card information. You need to update your WHOIS information.

If you are a service provider who requests the mailing address and other contact information from your customers, it is in your best interest to make the “change address” function as seamless and easy to do as possible. If your website is already set up with a self-serve function, that can be a huge plus for consumers. However, there is one other element that should be included.

Customers always appreciate it when they can post-date their account changes to some point in the future. By doing so, they can take their time to update their addresses days, weeks, or even months ahead of their actual moving day. That removes one more stressor from the process of moving from one home to another; that’s one fewer thing crunched into the day or two it takes to move.

Even if you don’t offer a self-serve function on your website for account updates, it is important to have this kind of feature implemented in your CMS solution. A customer should be able to call in advance and have the mailing address updated for a future date.

Great Gadgets: Acer Aspire ICONIA Tablet W500

Last month, we took a brief look at the Acer Iconia-6886 Dual-Screen Touchbook. It seems like such a fascinating device, but it does cost over $1,000. If you’re looking for a much cheaper alternative that’s a little different than the rest of the crowd, then you may want to divert your attention toward the Acer Aspire ICONIA Tablet W500 instead.

Rather than use the now popular NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and Google Android combination, this tablet is powered by an AMD C-50 dual core processor and Windows 7 Home Premium. That’s because it’s probably closer to being a netbook or notebook than it is to being a tablet. Even so, it’s 10.1-inch display is actually a touchscreen, giving you tablet functionality when you need it. When you’d prefer a more traditional configuration, the included keyboard dock provides that.

Going through the rest of the technical details, you’ll find a 32GB solid state drive, 2GB of DDR3 SDRAM, 2-in-1 card reader, four USB 2.0 ports, HDMI port with HDCP support, Ethernet (RJ-45) port, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity, integrated webcam, and built-in Bluetooth. This hybrid device really does aim to provide the best of both worlds, whether you want the traditional setup of a notebook or even more portable solution of a tablet.

The Acer Aspire ICONIA Tablet W500 BZ604 is available now through Amazon for $599.99, which is $49.01 off the regular price. This includes free Super Saver Shipping as well.

In the Sphere: Social Convention

Published on May 20, 2011   //  In the Sphere

Even before Internet shifted its attention toward social media, it was getting increasingly social in nature. And that’s where we turn for this week’s collection of blog posts.

Jamie Martin lets us know about a little secret: blogging can make you a better person. Yes, there’s something to be said about sticking to your blogging schedule and pouring out your thoughts in plain black and white. Build relationships, improve your writing, and even live longer as a result of your blogging endeavors!

Gretchen Rubin continues along a similar train of thought, telling us why Twitter can make you happy. She lists no fewer than eight different reasons why this holds up to be true. You can pursue your passions, distract yourself when you’re feeling down, and maintain loose relationships that may have otherwise been lost.

Bevan Bird very much recognizes that staying social on the Internet means keeping a a two-way line of communication open. That’s why he says that you should follow up with people who express interest. When someone “likes” your post on Facebook and you don’t know who this person is, follow up and see why they might have been interested. Ask questions and engage.

Neil Patel is a successful entrepreneur, so he knows a thing or two about getting the job done. He also recognizes the importance of morale and passion. That’s why he’s teaching us how to keep your employees happy while still pushing them to do the best job possible. Pushing the wrong way can completely backfire on your goals.

Free Money Finance finishes off today’s set of posts with some surprising findings. You don’t need to earn that much money in order to become wealthy. He shows off the example of a family of four living in Poway, California. Their household income is less than $60k, but they have a net worth of over $400k. Can you do the same?
