Showcase Saturday: Minimal Georgia

Published on Mar 19, 2011   //  Showcase Saturday

Just as people may have preferences for one brand of running shoe over another, the same can be said about people in design and their font choices. If you lean toward the Georgia side of things, then you’ll likely appreciate the Minimal Georgia Theme for WordPress.

Developed by Konstantin of Moscow, this is a decidedly minimalist design with two columns of fixed width. The main content is in the middle (with the publish date and comment count in a grayed area to the left), while the sidebar is located to the right. Naturally, you can customize the sidebar to suit your particular needs.

The theme comes with a series of theme options that are accessible through the main admin dashboard, as expected. Other highlights include thread comments, sticky posts, custom colors, and custom menu. It is also translation ready, in case you want to better approach an international audience.

In The Sphere: How Much Do You Need?

Published on Mar 18, 2011   //  In the Sphere

What’s going on in the blogosphere this week? Let’s take a virtual stroll through the digitally paved roads of the Internet to find out!

Simon Mackie of GigaOM shares some interesting information about the recently released Internet Explorer 9. Considering the many other web browser options that are out there, do you still use Internet Explorer from Microsoft? Why or why not?

Neil Patel keeps it real. He understands that many entrepreneurs do what they do because they want to be rich, but how much money do you really need to live comfortably? This will vary from person to person, but it really is a question worth asking when setting your income goals.

Leo Babauta has always been a champion of living a simpler and slower life. The same applies to his advice for curing insomnia. As counter-intuitive as it may sound, going for a run each day will actually help you go to sleep… but that’s still not the easiest way. Just tell yourself a bedtime story, so to speak.

Ray Ebersole takes us to the movies with his review of Battle Los Angeles. He got caught up in the hype, but he’s happy to report that the action movie lived up to the billing. Bring on the aliens and combat scenes!

RT Cunningham, like the rest of us, is seeing more and more products that are made in China. He questions, though, whether this really translates to meaning “piece of garbage” for everything made in China. Well, the old adage holds true: you get what you pay for.

Marketing 101: Photos on Business Cards

Published on Mar 17, 2011   //  Marketing Tips

Even though we are moving toward an increasingly paperless society, physical business cards are still an integral part of doing business in person. As such, questions related to design and layout are going to be something you want to address.

Naturally, you’ll want to your name, your title, the name of your business, and contact information on the card. However, you may or may not want to have your own personal photograph on there. This is mostly common practice for realtors, mortgage brokers, and other people that work in the real estate business, but what about other industries?

I’ve found that a growing number of bloggers and Internet marketers are starting to put their portraits on their business cards. This might be because they want to be more easily recognized and remembered when they are seen again, but this may or may not be a good idea.

Even if someone does not consciously or intentionally do it, we all have our prejudices and these affect the decisions that we make. If your photo gives off a negative impression, you might lose the client even before you really had a chance. What do you think? Should you have your portrait on your business card?

WordPress Wednesday: Blogroll to Page

Published on Mar 16, 2011   //  WordPress

When you look at most of the blogs on the Internet, the blog owners may choose to include a list of links either in the sidebar or in the footer of the site. This blogroll is a great way to grow a community and share relevant sites with your readers.

What if you want to embed that blogroll into a blog post or page? The whole point of a blogroll is that it can be dynamic in nature, changing over time as sites come and go. One way to embed the list is via the Blogroll to Page WordPress plug-in.

As its name implies, the plugin will allow you to output your blogroll links to any page or post on your blog. All you have to do is use the custom “blogroll-to-page” short code where you want it to be displayed. There are output parameters that can be configured to suit your needs too, including categorization.

For more information on how it works, head over to Club-Wp.com, the site of the plugin’s developer. That is also where you can find the free download link.

Business 101: Restaurant Addresses

Published on Mar 15, 2011   //  Business Topics

I think we’d all agree that just about any restaurant, regardless of size, can likely benefit from having a website. This is true of big brand name chains, as well as smaller mom-and-pop diners. However, you’ll find that not all restaurant websites are made alike.

In my journeys through the Internet, I’ve come across more than a few common concerns that seem to be pop up with restaurant websites. For instance, some sites may have the physical address of the restaurant as an image, possibly because they want to use a special design or font.

The problem with this is that customers are not able to copy and paste this text into a tool like Google Maps to find the location of the restaurant. This is just as much of a problem with Flash-based sites, because the text may not always be available to highlight for this purpose.

“But I already have a map on the site.” That may be true, but people may want to enter the address to get specific directions, to enter into a list of restaurants to visit, or any number of other reasons. So, make sure the text can be highlighted. You do want customers to be able to find you, right?

Great Gadgets: Samsung Galaxy Tab Wi-Fi

Published on Mar 14, 2011   //  Gadgets

The Apple iPad and iPad 2 are currently dominating the tablet market, but the onslaught of Android-based tablets is poised to really make a big impact in 2011. One of these products is the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

The model with 3G connectivity is already available, but a less expensive version that only has Wi-Fi should be coming out in the next month or two. The WiFi-only Galaxy Tab is currently rumored for release on April 4 and it’s said that pricing will start at just $399, a full $100 cheaper than the lowest model iPad 2.

The specs and features on the WiFi Galaxy Tab are otherwise identical to its 3G counterpart. This includes the 16GB of storage, 7-inch touchscreen display, and Android 2.2 Froyo operating system. There does not appear to be any Android 3.0 Honeycomb support coming down the line for this particular product.

What do you think? Would you want to save $100 and buy the WiFi Galaxy Tab or would you rather stick to the Apple iPad? What about the other tablet offerings from HP (Palm), Asus, Motorola, and others?
