WordPress Wednesday: See Attachments

Published on Dec 8, 2010   //  WordPress

Images and other multimedia are playing an increasingly large role in blogging. The focus is still very much on the written word, but people also want to see relevant pictures. After all, if you’re doing a product review, people want to see the product that you’re writing about. The same can be said about tutorials, travel blogs, and all sorts of other scenarios. Unfortunately, it can sometimes be difficult to keep track of all this media.

Working directly inside the WordPress framework is the appropriately named See Attachments plug-in. Under normal circumstances, you would have to click on one of the upload/insert buttons in the “edit post” page to see what files are attached to that post. This creates a lightbox that effectively blocks the content that you are currently writing.

With See Attachments, the attachments for a post or a page are shown directly on the edit page. You can choose to have it as a custom box below the main writing field or you can have the attachments shown (in thumbnail form) in the sidebar where you would find the fields for categories and post tags. Both options give you a much better “at a glance” view of what files you have already uploaded and connected to the current post or page.

You can download See Attachments for free from the WordPress Plugin Directory. It was coded by MijnPress.nl and authored by Ramon Fincken.

Business 101: Invest in the Network

Published on Dec 7, 2010   //  Business Topics

When you are a small business owner, there are certain expenses that you likely expect to pay. You will likely need to invest in a reliable Internet connection, for example, and this is an expense that you can write off as part of your operational costs. Similarly, you likely need to have a reliable phone line, proper equipment, business cards, and other such items that are part and parcel with running a business.

One area that some small business owners seem to neglect is networking. Yes, you can attend local networking events that allow you to mingle with other people in the industry. These are certainly useful if you make use of them in the right way, but did you know that some of these can be perfectly legitimate business expenses that you can write off as well? Say, for example, that you have to pay a fee to attend a conference. That fee can be written off as an expense.

Similarly, if in the course of negotiating with a potential client you take him or her out for a casual lunch to discuss the details, that meal is also a perfectly legitimate business expense that can be written off. These may seem like rather small expenses at the time, but every dollar counts and each of these small expenses can add up very quickly. If the purpose of the lunch was primarily for business, it’s a legitimate write-off.

Bear in mind that we are not tax professionals and you should consult with your accountant if you have any questions. That said, make sure you keep all your receipts, document these expenses accordingly, and be armed with the right set of information when you do inquire with your tax professional.

In The Sphere: Fives and Social Media

Published on Dec 3, 2010   //  In the Sphere

Another week, another speedlink. Let’s get on with it.

Lisa Bettany recently took a trip to Disneyland and she learned a few things. No, not about Mickey and Donald. Instead, she shares five tips for taking better vacation photos. She did have her DSLR in tow, but she was packing relatively light, remembering to experience the trip rather than viewing it all through a camera lens.

Vance Sova has been attending Dot Com Pho for some time now and he recognizes the importance of networking in person. Even if you make your living on the Internet, real world interactions really do trump the kind that you are able to make online with your contacts and colleagues.

Catherine Connors of Her Bad Mother shares some experiences she had as a child. More specifically, she remembers her mother telling her that she was beautiful when she didn’t really feel it inside. It’s all about what you see as you peek through the looking glass, even if they happen to be “mother-colored,” as it were.

Rebecca Bollwitt of Miss604 fame takes a moment to consider the less fortunate this winter. She lists several warm clothing donation sites in Vancouver. If you happen to have a spare sweater or coat, those less fortunate will surely appreciate the warmth and comfort that they can bring them.

Raul Pacheco, better known as Hummingbird604 in social spheres, knows that not everyone is on every social network. Even then, the dynamics are different. That’s why there are some situations where cross-linking content across platforms may be appropriate. There are other times where it may be less appropriate, but that’s completely at your own discretion. Do you connect your Facebook with your Twitter?
