Showcase Saturday: Suburbia Theme

Published on Nov 6, 2010   //  Showcase Saturday

While a great number of people choose to use WordPress as a blogging platform, it is also versatile enough to be a content management system for other types of websites. Fitting somewhere in between is the recent growth of “magazine” style themes.

One option for people interested in that format is the new Suburbia free WordPress theme. Made in cooperation with Demian Peeters, the theme is meant to be “clean and flexible,” while offering the versatility of a grid-based playout.

You can feature your bigger stories with larger thumbnail images along the top, plus your “second-tier” stories below with smaller thumbnails. Other highlights include a widget-ready design, SEO-friendly characteristics, logo uploader, theme options page, and clean typography.

Head over to Wpshower for more information, a live demo, and the free download link for Suburbia 1.1.

Marketing 101: Hootsuite Features

Published on Nov 4, 2010   //  Marketing Tips

When it comes to Twitter, there are more than a few different clients and software that you can use to manage your account. Many of them come with very robust features that go well beyond what you would be able to achieve through the basic Twitter website. One such desktop client is Hootsuite, which is also available as an iPhone application.

For the computer-based version, you’ll find that it can be a very powerful tool in your social media arsenal. It can handle other networks beyond Twitter, like Facebook, but we’ll focus on Twitter for the purposes of this blog post. One of the first things you’ll notice is that you can manage multiple Twitter profiles with Hootsuite. This is great if your company has different accounts for different arms and departments. You can also add “team members” to individual Twitter profiles, allowing multiple employees to update the same account.

In addition to regular functions, like appending images and other shortening links, Hootsuite can also be used to schedule your Twitter updates in the future. Say, for example, that you’d like to announce a sale on a certain product, but you won’t have the time to send out the update right when the sale begins. You can pre-write and time-stamp the update, just as you would with a WordPress blog post.

Similarly, Hootsuite allows you to import RSS feeds, automatically sending out a Twitter update when a new item is added to the feed. This would work well for a company blog like the one we have here at BlueFur. With multiple columns, multiple accounts, and countless features, Hootsuite can be a great way to help manage your Twitter marketing strategies.

WordPress Wednesday: AdsCaptcha

Published on Nov 3, 2010   //  WordPress

There’s an ancient Chinese proverb that goes a little something like this: “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” Sounds simple enough, right? Well, there is something very profound about this proverb that can be applied to your Internet entrepreneurial journeys.

Millions of people encounter Captcha codes every day and these are a great way to keep out the spam, ensuring that you’re actually dealing with people and not with bots. The trouble is that they are oftentimes nonsensical and serve no other purpose. With AdsCaptcha for WordPress, these anti-spam measures can serve a secondary function of making you money.

The Captcha code is not only displayed with an advertisement; the advertisement is actually a part of the Captcha. If the ad is for blue widgets, for instance, the web visitor will then need to type “blue widget” into the appropriate field. Why is this important? By typing in those words, the web user is much more likely to remember and understand the ad being displayed, because he or she is actively engaging with it, rather than passively viewing it (as he or she would with a conventional ad).

There is a video up on AdsCaptcha.com with more information. It is also there that you will find the free download link and other supporting information about the WordPress plugin.

Business 101: The Home Office Meeting

Published on Nov 2, 2010   //  Business Topics

Go back twenty years and the concept of the home office was a relative rarity. Thanks largely to the growth of the Internet and other useful tools, an increasing number of people find that a home office is not a luxury; it has become a necessity. This is true both of people who are gainfully employed by companies and by people who run their own home-based businesses.

When meeting clients at a typical office, it is much easier to get the time in a conference room or some other room where you can have a private discussion without too much distraction. What happens, then, when you only have a home office and you need to meet with a client? You could meet in a public place, like a coffee shop, but that may take away from the appearance of professionalism.

If you are going to have clients and colleagues meet you at your home, it is important that you have a few things in place for your home office. First, the home office should be easily accessible with minimal travel through the “personal” or “home” space in your house. In this way, a separate entrance is ideal, but a bedroom closest to the front door can work as well. It also helps if the bedroom you are using is as far away as possible from the “family life” areas of your home.

Also, if you are going to have a meeting, you’ll need to have an appropriate table or desk for this purpose. The layout, if you are going to have guests over on a fairly regular basis, should be similar to what you would have in a more conventional office. Have a comfortable chair not only for yourself, but also for the visiting client or colleague. Make sure there is room on the desk in case they need to lay out some papers.

It is very much viable to have clients, colleagues, and other associates over to your home office for in-person meetings. You just have to be suitably prepared, minimizing the impact that it can have on the more personal areas in your home.
