Marketing 101: The Roaming Van

Published on Jun 24, 2010   //  Marketing Tips

The trouble with many marketing campaigns is that they can be largely static in nature. They are in one place and they are not transported to other locations. Buy some billboard space, for example, and only people in that area will see it.

During the summer, one of the more effective marketing tactics that you can try is the roaming company van or truck. This is when you get a vehicle, completely outfitted with plenty of your company’s branding, and you drive around the city reaching out to your target demographics.

Make stops at some of the hottest spots in your town, like by the popular beach or park where people may be playing this summer. Just standing there and offering marketing materials probably won’t be very attractive, so offer some free products of some kind to entice that kind of attention.

It is ideal if the free stuff is related to your company, but this isn’t completely necessary. Even if you get some branded water, people will appreciate the chilled refreshment on hot summer days. This helps to establish a positive relationship with your brand and this can very helpful moving forward.

WordPress Wednesday: Link Love

Published on Jun 23, 2010   //  WordPress

Do you find that your blog is starting to attract a lot of spammers, but you still want to find a way to reward the legitimate commentators on your site? That can be quite the tough balance to achieve, but it is possible.

If you choose to add the “dofollow” attribute to all commentator links, you could attract too many spammers. Go with the default “nofollow” attribute and the real people leaving comments don’t get that advantage. So, maybe you want to try the Link Love plugin and get the best of both worlds.

In short, the WordPress plugin will count the number of approved comments left by each visitor (based on the provided email address). When that author reaches a certain comment threshold, his or her links then gain the dofollow attribute. Prior to that threshold, the links have the default nofollow attribute.

Business 101: Beyond Monetary Rewards

Published on Jun 22, 2010   //  Business Topics

When it comes to return on investment, many companies get caught up in the hard figures and are interested in nothing more than the money. While it certainly makes sense to pay attention to the bottom line, there are other areas to consider as well.

Take respectability and legitimacy, for instance. John Chow was already known online as a successful Internet entrepreneur and Michael Kwan was already known in some circles as a freelance writer, but neither had gained much in terms of mainstream credibility.

That’s partly why they got together to write Make Money Online, the first “real” physical book by either gentleman. This helps to establish Chow as a mainstream expert and it allows Kwan to call himself a published author. Even if they don’t make much money directly from the book, the secondary benefits are worth so much more.

For your own company, have you considered any other promotional tactics that may not necessarily result in more money right away, but could work wonders on expanding your brand presence and legitimacy?

Great Gadgets: Flip Underwater Case

Published on Jun 21, 2010   //  Gadgets

Sometimes, the best gadgets also happen to be among the simplest. Many of you may already own a Flip Video pocket camcorder and you may already be enjoying its ease of use and high-quality video recording. It’s great for family excursions, backyard barbecues, and even covering trade shows!

With summer in full swing, you may also be hitting the beach or the pool at some point. Unfortunately, electronics and water typically do not mix. Thankfully, there is the Flip Underwater Case for UltraHD and Ultra 2nd-Generation Camcorders. This simple case will wrap up your device and keep it safe from the wet stuff.

Meanwhile, you are still granted full access to all of your controls and the clear case allows you to still see the LCD viewfinder to frame your shots just right. It adds a little bit of bulk to the Flip camcorder, but not so much so that you won’t still want to carry it around with you. The Underwater Case supports depths up to 30 feet, so you can even go snorkeling with it if you’d like!

The Flip Underwater Case is on sale on Amazon.ca for just $36.99, which is $13 off the regular price of $49.99.
