WordPress Wednesday: Domain Mirror Plugin

Published on May 19, 2010   //  WordPress

What if you own multiple domains, but you don’t want to manage multiple WordPress installations? It is still possible to have your blog appear on these different domains without having to use redirects or multiple installations.

This is quite the specific type of application, but you can achieve this functionality by using the Domain Mirror plugin for WordPress. In short, it allows multiple domains to point toward the same WordPress installation. In effect, you are mirroring your own site in multiple places.

Search engine optimization experts may or may not like kind of functionality, but there are people out there who will appreciate the capabilities of this WordPress plugin. To see a “live” version of the plugin, take a look at LightPainting.org and McAleavy.org. Both domains are using the same database and the same WordPress installation.

The Domain Mirror WordPress plugin is free to download and comes with a decent amount of documentation in case you need some help with its use.

Business 101: Distribution of Income

Published on May 18, 2010   //  Business Topics

When you run a small home-based business, there’s a good chance that you have a total of one employee: you. At least, this is how it’s like in the beginning when you are first starting to expand your business, but what happens when the volume gets a little bigger than you can handle?

It is perfectly viable and acceptable to hire family members and other people in your household to help you out with your business and, if you do so, you may as well take advantage of the tax incentives that can result from “writing them off” as a business expense. Note that you can’t simply “pay” your wife because it’s convenient to do so; she actually has to be doing some work for you and the rate of pay has to be reasonable.

However, by doing so, you can better distribute the income in your home to make for lower overall income tax payments. Let’s say, for example, that you earn $80,000 from your home-based business one year and your spouse made $20,000 working part-time at a regular job. You can then pay your spouse some money so that your net income is less, bumping you in a lower tax bracket, while keeping your spouse in the lower tax bracket he or she is already in. The net tax would then be lower.

If you have children of working age, hiring and paying them to perform certain tasks related to your business can be a good way to teach them responsibility. It can introduce them to the world of work in a less intimidating and more familiar environment.

What do you think? Have you hired any family members to work for you?

Great Gadgets: USB Stress Ball

Published on May 17, 2010   //  Gadgets

Are you suffering from a case of the Mondays and you need somewhere to relieve your frustration? You probably shouldn’t start throwing a tantrum in the office or start yelling at your boss, so how can you feel better without losing your job?

A regular stress ball can only do so much. For the real geeks in the audience, the USB Stress Ball looks like a great solution. Connecting to just about any computer via a standard USB connection, the USB Stress Ball lets you squeeze the image on your monitor.

When you twist, smush, and otherwise contort the rubber ball at the end of the USB cable, the image on your monitor will get similarly squeezed and misshapen, springing back to its regular shape when you let go of the pressure. Will this help you be more productive? Maybe, maybe not, but at least you can let out a little steam without getting fired.

Find the USB Stress Ball on ThinkGeek for $19.99.

BlueFur Customer of the Week: Josephine Harrison

Published on May 16, 2010   //  BlueFur Customer of the Week

In this day and age, it’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There are money worries and other stresses that weigh heavily on our minds and it’s easy to get bombarded with the yearning for new physical possessions. We have to take some time to appreciate the finer things in life too.

That’s where an artist like Josephine Harrison can come into the picture. She has produced some great work over the years and her website serves as a platform to share these collages, modern day fairy tales, and signed prices. They are “an expression of steps towards the fruition of a better world for all peoples and life forms on Planet Earth.”

Take a moment to look over some of the books she has published and the stunning prints she has created. We could all use a little more art in our lives.

Showcase Saturday: SuperBlog

Published on May 15, 2010   //  Showcase Saturday

Some people like having flashy themes with all sorts of cool widgets. They want to have fantastic Twitter integration and the ability to use pop-over and pop-under elements for added reader value. These people would not be interested in the SuperBlog theme, despite what its name may lead you to believe.

That’s because SuperBlog was developed by the good people at SimpleThemes.org. The WordPress template was designed to be as simple and clean as possible, offering faster loading times and an easier user experience. You get a couple of sidebars off to the right where you can provide links to your archives and other content, whereas the main navigation is found as a series of links near the top of the page.

Interestingly enough, there isn’t even a header image to go with this theme. It’s just plain text. This presumably helps even further with loading times, but you could just as easily alter the theme’s code to implement a proper header image for better branding. That’s up to you.

For more information, a live demo, and the download link, head on over to SimpleThemes.org.

In the Sphere: Signatures, Calls, and Surnames

Life is complex and so is the blogosphere. Here is an eclectic collection of posts to occupy you for the weekend.

Jeff Cutler is pretty savvy when it comes to staying connected on the Internet, but he may have gone a little overboard with his revamped email signature. You want people to be able to reach you, but Jeff’s take may be a little too much for most tastes.

John Grohol recognizes the importance of human interaction, but what do you do when your miles away from your loved ones? As it turns out, a phone call may be just as effective as a hug. It shows the person that they are loved and appreciated. Did you call your mom on Mother’s Day?

Free Money Finance gives us a general guideline as to where our savings levels should be based on our current ages. Is your capital-to-income ratio where it should be? I seem to be slightly ahead of the curve in this regard, but I haven’t taken on a mortgage yet.

Thursday Bram ponders whether new wives (or husbands, for that matter) should take on their spouse’s surnames upon marriage. This isn’t just from a social perspective, but also about the branding of a freelancer and whether he or she can afford to change names.

Simon Mackie recognizes that more and more people are working longer and longer hours these days. Are these extended work days damaging to your health? A study seems to indicate a connection to angina, heart attacks, and heart disease. However, more flexible schedules seem connected to lower blood pressure and better heart rates.
