Great Gadgets: Iomega Network Attached Storage

Published on Apr 12, 2010   //  Gadgets

Having a regular external hard drive can be a good way to back up your data, but it’s so much more convenient if you make use of network attached storage. Unfortunately, most NAS enclosures can cost $300 or more and that doesn’t even include the hard drives contained within!

Offering a much more affordable and versatile option is the Iomega Home Media 1 TB Network Attached Storage. It may look like any old external hard drive, but it can actually connect to your home or work network via your router. This way, the data can be accessed by anyone who has access to your network.

This goes even further, because the Iomega Home Media device can even be accessed remotely from an Internet-connected computer. You just have to have it configured to allow for remote access and it has to stay “on” while you are away. Other features include direct BitTorrent downloads, iTunes server, print server, and more. You get a full terabyte of storage too.

Find the Iomega Home Media 1TB Network Attached Storage on Amazon.ca for $169.99. That represents a 26% savings over the regular price of $230.99.

Showcase Saturday: WordPress Mobile Theme

Published on Apr 10, 2010   //  Showcase Saturday

More and more people are accessing the Internet from their BlackBerry devices, Android smartphones, Apple iPhones, and similar gadgets these days, so it pays to have a mobile version of your blog set up to best address this growing demographic. A full site does not always render well in the smaller confines of a smartphone and many people may not appreciate the heavier bandwidth requirements too.

There are several mobile themes available for WordPress, but many of these can be quite bland, boring, and generic. Aiming to buck the trend a little is the aptly named WordPress Mobile Theme. Whereas many mobile themes offer very little in terms of customization, this theme lets you choose your own color schemes, insert smaller thumbnail images, and define your own theme widths.

Just like “full” themes, the width of the WordPress Mobile Theme can be defined in pixels or in percentage, further allowing you to customize the user experience that people get when they land on your site from a mobile device. The lightweight nature of the theme makes for faster loading too.

In the Sphere: Money, Movies, and Demographics

Published on Apr 9, 2010   //  In the Sphere

We’ve reached the end of another work week, so that means it’s time once again to see what the blogosphere had to offer us in the preceding week. Enjoy the roundup.

The Simple Dollar starts us off with a great piece on perspective. It is very much true that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. A friend of Trent managed to get a great leather couch and an antique Victrola for a total price of zero dollars and zero cents. How? A rich person was throwing them away.

Tyler Cruz is rapidly expanding his online empire. He had Movie Vault years ago, but he has since revitalized the site with a new design, new content, and a new marketing push. The net result is that Movie-Vault.com is really taking off. Most recently, he had staff at the premiere of Clash of the Titans, including interviews with the cast on the red carpet!

Jeff from 8Asians.com poses an interesting question. As you may have heard, the census is currently taking place in the United States and some questions are becoming problematic for some people. For example, is a Filipino person classified as Hispanic or Asian? Jeff says that they’re sort of both but neither.

Gary Lee couldn’t help himself last weekend, splurging on a brand new Apple iPad. After spending that much money, he did find a way to save some cash. He made a free iPad dock by thinking outside the box from inside the box. You don’t have to break the bank to accessorize your new Apple gadget, you see.

Chris Bibey recognizes the importance of networking, even if it is with people that you may otherwise perceive as competitors. There are many reasons to talk with other freelance writers. You can learn, you can teach, and, above all else, you have the opportunity to make new friends. There’s always more work out there for all of you to enjoy.

Marketing 101: Summer Fun Pack

Published on Apr 8, 2010   //  Marketing Tips

To maximize the success of your business, you have to learn to capitalize on opportunities as they arise. Just as it seems favorable to run Christmas and holiday-themed promotions in December, we are coming up on the time of the year when children, teens, and college students will soon be flooding the marketplace with plenty of time on their hands.

Some of this demographic (particularly college and university students) may be self-sufficient with part-time or full-time jobs, but the younger set still rely on their parents and guardians for funding. As such, your marketing efforts have to appeal both to the target consumer (the children and teens), as well as the people who will be opening up their wallets (parents) to satisfy the need to “do something” during the summer.

That’s why it may be a good idea to partner up with related, but not necessarily competing companies in your area. For instance, an amusement park may partner with a mini golf course and a water park to offer a “summer fun pack” that combines all three activities at a reduced price. This reduction in price can appeal to parents, since they save over buying the three admissions separately, and the multiple activities appeal to the children, because they get to visit more than one attraction.

Are you doing anything special during the summer months to capitalize on the influx of children, teens, and college students?

WordPress Wednesday: WordPress for Apple iPad

Published on Apr 7, 2010   //  WordPress

You probably heard about a little product that launched (in the United States) over the weekend. It was supposed to be quite the big deal and news surrounding this device has been flooding the Internet for the last few days. Yup, we’re talking about the Apple iPad.

Many people are very excited about its release and the possibilities that it may be able to offer to the average tech-loving consumer. As a blogger, it’s also very good to hear about a new WordPress for iPad app being released, allowing you to completely manipulate your blog from the iPad just as you would from a full-fledged computer.

In short, the iPad version of WordPress is identical to the iPhone and iPod touch version, except it has been optimized to make use of that substantially larger touchscreen. No additional features were implemented for this first release, but the core features are still there: you can moderate comments, write posts, insert images, and more.

Dubbed WordPress for iPhone OS 2.4, the app will also work on the iPhone and iPod touch, but the more exciting news is that it can be used with the larger Apple iPad as well. This could prove to be the future of mobile blogging for WordPress fans, at least in the short term until a camera-equipped 3G-enabled version of the iPad is released. Apple has to be working on that, right?

For screenshots and more information, head over to the WordPress for iPhone OS website. The download is available through the App Store.
