Most people are familiar with using an Apple iPod for listening to audiobooks and music tracks, but that little portable device is also capable of recording sound too. The only trouble is that the iPod doesn’t come with a microphone of its own, so what is the rogue interviewer to do?
Well, they can check out the Mini Microphone from USB Fever. It’s marketed as a Mini Microphone for the iPhone 3G, though I’m not entirely sure how useful it would be for a cell phone that already has a microphone. The Mini Microphone has also been tagged to work with the iPod nano 4G, iPod Classic 120G, and the iPod touch 2G. It’s not perfectly clear whether it would work with other models of iPod as well.
It’s supposed to be completely plug-and-play, so all you have to do is insert the little nub of a microphone into the the headphone jack on your chosen iPod. It’s very small, of course, so you will have no trouble carrying it around. Just try not to lose it.
In order for the Mini Microphone to wok with the second-generation iTouch, you’ll need to download and install software that will handle the voice recorder function, such as iTalk Recorder or Easy Recorder. The iPod nano 4G apparently has pre-loaded software for recordings. For more info on the $14.99 Mini Mic, check out the product page.

Wow, THAT is pretty neat. The only thing missing to turn the iPod Touch into a (admittedly limited) VoIP phone is a microphone, and if the sound quality of this one is decent, we might have a winner.

The line between mp3 player and computer continues to blur.

For a while, the fact that other MP3 players could be used as a handheld voice recorder may have led some to choose another MP3 player over the iPod. It’s good to know the iPod can now be used as a handheld voice recorder. Thanks for this great tip.
