Update WordPress 2.7

Published on Dec 10, 2008   //  Security, WordPress

Attention bloggers if you have manually installed WordPress then you should  upgrade to 2.7. There are many new features and visual changes now in 2.7.

For those who installed WordPress with Fantastico, Netenberg usually has the upgrade released a week or two later. We do post Fantastico updates on the blog so keep an eye open for that.

Please also note we will post when it is time for Managed Blog hosting customers to upgrade in this blog.

  • I like WordPress for it’s built in seo functionality and many other things. Having said that, I’m not too pleased with 2.7. It’s so busy it literally hurts my eyes. I am a minimalist at heart but I know WordPress feels it has to keep tweaking and “evolving.” I think the updates are way too close together.

  • I tested WP 2.7 through all its beta and release candidate phases and, unlike some others, I found that 2.7 is less usable. It is also far less accessible for those that require accessibility. As a result, I have rolled back to 2.6.5 and am not likely to upgrade unless there are some serious improvements to usability.

I have clients who use assistive technologies and the increased use of AJAX has made it impossible for them to use 2.7.

I also found the admin side slower than earlier versions. Since I was already using plugins that give me the extra functionality that is included in 2.7 there are no new features that I miss out on so no real need to upgrade.
While I would never knock any open source developers (I am one myself) I do think that 2.7 needed more thought. If eye candy was the only factor in determining whether a release is good or not, then 2.7 would win. But for those of us who need solid functionality and who want a usable, accessible app to work with, 2.7 falls way short.
