cPanel Accelerated

Published on Nov 17, 2008   //  News Worthy

Did Doc’Brown take over at cPanel and hookup his flux capacitor to their software? One would think so based on cPanel’s new upgrade code name cPanel Accelerated performance. We have upgraded all of our servers to cPanel and WHM 11.24 and so far we have seen vast improvements in CPU and memory load immediately.

According to the cPanel’s official site the new cPanel Accelerated has been streamlined for speed. Code, images and processes have all been streamlined for optimized performance.

Are there any bugs?

So far we have found one for Horde which can be easily fixed by our staff. If you find any please let us know by opening a ticket at our Help Desk.

Great Gadgets: Garmin GPS on the Cheap

Published on Nov 17, 2008   //  Gadgets

As with most other forms of technology, portable GPS navigation devices are getting more affordable than ever. No longer do you need to invest hundreds of dollars on a quality GPS navigator. At the same time, you need to be careful when looking at budget devices, because not all of them are built alike.

One company that has always been well respected for the quality of its products and the ease of its user interface is Garmin. While you could certainly consider one of its more expensive offerings, the ultra-affordable Garmin Nuvi 200C is the ticket for people on a budget. Better still, it’s available for just $140. That’s not a sale price. That’s not a clearance. That is actually the regular price.

Naturally at that price, you’ll have to do without some of the premium features that you may find on more expensive units. Teh Nuvi 200C does not have text-to-speech, MP3 playback, video file support, or downloadable voices, but it does offer a nice 3.5-inch touchscreen display, turn-by-turn directions, numerous points of interest, and an SD memory card slot. That sounds pretty good for $140, I’d say.

For the record, I use a Garmin Nuvi 250 with similar specs and I couldn’t be happier.

Weekend Projects: Clean Up Your CSS

Published on Nov 15, 2008   //  Weekend Projects

Weekend Project

Do you use CSS on your site? I know more and more sites are using CSS as a standard. The problem is a lot of CSS you see is very messy. This weeks project is to clean up your CSS. Having bad code can effect users and bots so it is a good idea to clean up any problems in your CSS.

Finding your CSS
Some of you may not even know you are using CSS or not. To find out open your site in your browser and go to Tools and choose Source (or Page Source for FF).  Scan your code or do a CTRL+F and look for anything with .css in it. Copy that link to your css as we will need that for the next step.

If you are using a WordPress blog you might have several CSS files look for the style.css file. For example for our blog the CSS file is here http://blog.bluefur.com/wp-content/themes/bluefur/style.css.

Ready, Set, Scrub
Now that we have the link to our CSS file we can open the Clean CSS site and paste your link into the CSS from URL box and click Process CSS.

You will see below that it will provide you a list of messages. Read them over to see if there are any issues. If there are then fix them in your CSS file.

If you get stuck let me know in the comments.

In The Sphere: World Diabetes Day

Published on Nov 14, 2008   //  In the Sphere

As you may have heard, today is World Diabetes Day, raising awareness for the disease and the fundraising efforts that are going on to combat it. I’ve dedicated a couple of the posts for today’s In the Sphere toward this cause, but I’ve thrown in some other content for you to enjoy as well. Have a great weekend!

Buzz Bishop is hard at work raising both awareness and money for World Diabetes Day. In fact, he’s helping to build a diabetes community, selling items via an auction for 95Crave, and talking about various World Diabetes Day events in Vancouver. He was even featured on Urban Rush!

Country Girl Diabetic has a blog dedicated to describing the experience of someone living with diabetes, every day, every hour, every minute. If you’re interested, I suggest you take a good look through her blog for all kinds of fascinating insights, including her thoughts on World Diabetes Day and what it means to her.

Derrich has a post for the cell phone geeks in audience, because he is comparing the BlackBerry Bold and the Nokia E71. Both of these smartphones offer terrific QWERTY keyboards, high-speed Internet access, and plenty of productivity, but which one reigns supreme in the end? Well, it depends on what you need and prefer, of course!

Derek Semmler is highly respected in the blogosphere and he was highly honored to be mentioned alongside Seth Godin, Aaron Wall, and other top-tier bloggers for a new book called Blog Blazers. In that book, 40 top bloggers (including Derek) share their blogging secrets and you can win the book for free from Derek. His contest runs until November 26th.

Sonia Simone asks if you would take the red pill or the blue pill, waking up with no recollection of the experience or diving in to see how far the rabbit hole goes. In her Matrix guide to content marketing, she describes four kinds of content marketing. Are you Neo or Agent Smith? Spoon Boy or Persephone?
