WordPress Wednesday: Remove Max Width

Published on Oct 1, 2008   //  WordPress

What’s the point of having a nice large widescreen LCD monitor if you can’t make use of all that glorious on-screen real estate? Sure, people have a tendency to open multiple windows to fill out those 20, 24, or even 30-inches of screen space, but even then, you can feel restricted by the layouts of certain sites. Whitespace is nice, but it’s also a bit of wasted space.

When WordPress 2.5 made it into the primetime earlier this year, it brought along some rather significant changes to the dashboard or control panel. The layout is quite different than previous iterations of WordPress and one of the critical changes was the inclusion of a fixed width for the dashboard. For instance, when you go into the area to write a post, the text entry area is of a set width. Wouldn’t you prefer if it stretched all the way across the window?

Well, you’re not alone in that sentiment and someone has set out to provide a solution. The appropriately named Remove Max Width is a handy WordPress plug-in that — you guessed it — removes the maximum width restriction found in current installations of WordPress. In effect, everything in the dashboard now has a fluid width and can stretch all the way across the window.

Pretty neat. Check it out at dd32.id.au, where you’ll also find screenshots for your previewing enjoyment.

  • Nice plugin! Too bad I don’t have a widescreen monitor to need it. But Christmas is right around the corner!

  • Nice article. This is also one of the things the plugin wp-tweaks can do apart from a number of other handy little tricks…. You might want to check that one out too…

    Cheers
