Great Gadgets: Dell Mini 9 Netbook

Published on Sep 8, 2008   //  Gadgets

Ever since the Asus Eee PC launched last year, it seems like the world has fallen in love with the smaller form factor and improved portability of netbooks and subnotebooks. Following in the footsteps of Asus, we have since seen small laptops from companies like MSI, HP, and Acer. Joining the netbook fray this past week was one of the biggest names in the world of consumer computing.

The Dell Mini 9, which you may know as the Inspiron Mini or Dell E (both rumored names for the netbook), is a small laptop with an 8.9-inch display. The screen offers a resolution of 1024×600, which is identical to many of the other 8.9-inch notebooks on the market today. At launch, there are three configurations available.

At $349, you get an Intel Atom Processor N270 (1.6GHz), LED backlit display, Ubuntu OS, 512MB RAM, 4GB SSD, and 2GB of online Box.net storage. At $399, you get the same processor and backlit display, but the operating system is Windows XP Home Edition. Also, the solid state drive is increased to 8GB of capacity. You still only have 512MB of RAM, however. At $449, you get 1GB of RAM and a 16GB solid state drive, along with Windows XP Home and the Intel Atom processor.

Would you buy a Dell Mini 9 over an Asus Eee PC, Acer Aspire One, or MSI Wind? Why or why not?

  • It’s funny how high-capacity solid state drives are super pricey, but you can get fairly high capacity secure digital cards for less. Do any of these nanocomputers have SD slots? Hm….
