Branding 101 – The Law of Shape

Branding 101When choosing a brand your logo is a very important statement about your company. It will either help you define your market or be something easy to remember. The ideal logo will be horizontal in shape and should be 2 1 /4 units wide by 1 unit high. Avoid using a generic logo or a word only logo as they are both easy to forget and will require more money to brand in the long run.

I know there are lots of brands that do not follow these rules. IBM and Microsoft to name 2 off the top of my head. Just remember that those companies that do stick out spent millions and millions of dollars so you would remember them. If your starting out I am presume you do not have that kind of money.

If your not sure how to go about making a logo then I would suggest the best method is to use a contest design site. The way these sites work is you pay a flat fee for your logo and many designers submit possible logo ideas. You can then tell the designers if you like their designs or make modifications. That process can continue until you are 100% happy with the outcome.  The advantage to using this method is that instead of having one designer who will only have a few concepts for your logo and will usually only do a few modifications on those logos, you know have many designers all submitting very different designs. One of the places I have used in the past is Design Outpost. They developed both our InfernoDrive and ManticoreMedia logo’s.

If your business currently does not have a strong logo then I suggest you do not wait to start re-branding. Do it now. Having a strong brand will increase sales and the value of your company immediately.

What logo would you say is the best for branding that sticks out in your mind?
