twhirl Review

Posted on March 20th, 2008

Twhirl LogoUp until today I really never understood why anyone would use twitter. For those that have never used twitter, it is a micro blogging site. Unlike a full blown blog you can make mini 140 characters posts about where you are, what you are doing or anything that comes across your mind.

So today I was reading Miss 604’s blog and she was talking about some fun stuff going on at twitter. So I did a little research on how I should be using twitter by reading various blogs. If you do have a twitter account then it is an absolute must to have a notifier. I went out and started downloading and testing various twitter notifier software’s. I was really disappointed that most of them did not work. Frustrated I posted on my twitter asking what should I be using. A few minutes passed and a local Vancouver designer posted that I should try twhirl. I quickly downloaded it and have been using it all afternoon.

I am extremely happy with twhirl and now see how useful twitter can be. Like a blog you can join or create a community. You can network with people in your niche, local area or interests. Twhirl notifies you when someone posts that you are following, makes it easy to message people and faster to make posts (tweets). If you are not using twitter then I suggest you do. After you sign-up download twhirl and then add me to your twitter.

Thanks for the plug Gary. You probably don’t remember me, but we’ve met before.

My friend Duane has a great plugin for WordPress blogs (called WordTwit) that post an announcement to your Twitter whenever you publish a blog post - using Twitter like a mini-RSS feed reader for your followers.

After using Twitter for the last year I find it’s more than just Facebook-style status updates - it’s also “where can I get lunch in Gastown?” and you’ll have dozens of suggestions :-P

My Twitter app of choice is Twitterific. I don’t like the new version (with ads and a limit to how many times you can refresh in an hour) so I haven’t upgraded my version at home, but I use the colourful (yet buggy) newer version at work.

I have been using the Twitter Tools plugin for WordPress…

I think it does the same thing.

Yes I have saw a lot of posts on Twitteriffic with high praise although I do not use a Mac so was glad to find a great Windows tool.

Rebecca (Miss604) was precisely the one who explained to me what Twitter is. I’m not 100% sure that I want to join Twitter simply because I don’t have a cell phone (and even if I did, I wouldn’t have data transmission plans). And I think the best way to Twitter is to have the equipment (e.g. on your cell phone or iPhone as the case may be).

That being said, I wonder if I could join Twitter and just do tweets from my laptop when I’m at a coffee shop.

Of course, not having a Facebook account also helps :) But you know, with the Sarah Lacy/Mark Zuckerberg debacle (which I also discussed on my blog) I am a bit afraid of Twitter right now. But surprising as it may sound, Lacy now has 1400 people following her on Twitter (which I find a bit surprising and annoying).

twitter is all about the community. great tool for networking with tech orientated people. also, serves as a micro-RSS feed for popular tech/news sites. i.e. engadget, bbc news, tech crunch, all have twitter accounts. i wouldn’t recommend using twitter as an RSS for your blog as it is pretty much frowned upon by the twitterati. personally, i like receiving updates when people post to their blogs. But this recent tweet by Merlin Mann convinced me to stop, even covert, RSSing of my blog on twitter.

“twat” (n.) - Twitter post that self-links to blog post, whitepaper, or webinar on using Twitter to promote yourself. Alt.: author of same.

Yipes. i def don’t want to be a twat!
