Marketing 101: Extending Word of Mouth

Posted on March 13th, 2008

Greg Morgan from BCMBlog had a great post over the weekend that talked about the power of contacts. We all know how important it is to have an effective business card, but it is even more important to actually make use of those connections you make at networking events, trade shows, and conferences.

During events like these, a lot of business cards are exchanged and most just end up in a bin or a Rolodex, never to be looked at again. It’s far too easy to forget who you met and what they do. To better stand out from the crowd, it may be worth your while to send a short email to each and every person that you meet at a networking event, trade show, or conference.

The message need not be long, but it will certainly bring your business card to the top of the pile. The recipient will be reminded of who you are and what you do. In the email, you can quickly mention something that you learned from them, for example, or perhaps you can start a discussion about something that the two of you attended, like a keynote speech.

Handing out business cards is one thing; developing a worthwhile business relationship is another altogether.
