Business 101: Developing a Business Plan

Published on Feb 26, 2008   //  Business Topics

So, you’ve decided to go into business for yourself. Congratulations! Before you hurl yourself headlong into the arena of entrepreneurship, however, it is important you develop a viable business plan. As they say, if you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail. Depending on the type of business that you’re going to start, you may need a less or more complex business plan. Even if you don’t think that you need a formal plan, it’s important that you at least partake in some initial research to understand how you will fit into the whole legal and financial procedures.

Some of you may be wondering what a business plan entails in the first place. Well, a business plan typically lays out the goals (S.M.A.R.T. goals are best) for your business, why you believe they are attainable, and how you plan on achieving them. This is a formal statement and it’s one that many financial institutions and other agencies require in order to determine your eligibility for business loans and so forth. Without a business plan, the bank will not give you any money. Moreover, you need a business plan to properly project matters surrounding cash flow.

For more information about business plans, check out the sample plans at Small Business BC. The information is catering to businesses in British Columbia, but the general concepts apply no matter where you run your business. You can also check out the Interactive Business Planner at Canada Business. You will need an account (free) in order to use that feature.

iStockphoto Review

iStockPhotoI have been asked on more then one occasion where I go to get stock images for building sites. I have used a lot of sites in the past but I have started to exclusively use iStockphoto.com as my only source for images. My main reason for using them is that most of their images for web usage is less then $2.

iStockphoto provides images, vector drawings, flash animations and movie clips that you can use on your site or in print materials. To get started create an account, drop some money in to your account and begin searching.

Once you find a picture your ready to buy choose an image size and click the download. For web use I would suggest sticking to Small or XSmall as these will fit your needs. If your going to use one on a marketing slick you should buy a Medium to Large so that your end product will not be blurry or pixelated.

Next time you work on your marketing I suggest you do a quick search at iStockphoto to find the right image to fit your target market.

What stock image sites have you used?

Great Gadgets: Panasonic 32GB SDHC Memory Card

Standard definition video just doesn’t seem to cut it anymore, so a number of manufacturers are now producing HD camcorders for the masses. Some of these come equipped with integrated hard drives, but there is definitely a demand for expandable memory. This is partly because of convenience, but it’s also because it makes the camcorders quite a bit smaller. The issue, then, is how you manage to get enough storage capacity for all that high-def content.

Panasonic is set to release one of the most massive memory cards on the market, despite the fact that this card is about the same size as a postage stamp. The SDHC format has become quite popular among digital camera users, so it’s an easy transition over to digital camcorders and other multimedia devices. The card shown here bumps the memory capacity up to a whopping 32 gigabytes. That’s way bigger than my 4GB SDHC card.

The data transfer rate on this card is quite impressive too. Although it’s listed as a Class 6 memory card, the Panasonic 32GB SDHC has a claimed rate of over 20MB/sec. That’s pretty speedy and it should be able to keep up with most current applications. Unfortunately for those of us on a budget, the Panasonic 32GB SDHC card — which is set for launch in April — will retail in the $700 range.

Branding 101 – Law of Advertising

Branding 101Last week we looked at an example of the Law of Contraction. This week we look at the law of advertising which states that once you have a brand that the only way you can keep that brand alive is by marketing it.

One way you will see many brands exert this law of branding is by being a leader in their vertical market. How many times have you heard Budweiser as the King of Beers? I know those words stick out in my mind. Hear it enough times and you might begin to believe it (until you taste it).

If your not a leader in your vertical then find a vertical in your industry that you can be a leader in.

What brands stick in your mind that make use of being a leader?
