Where’s the B.E.E.F.?

Published on Dec 17, 2007   //  Development

Where's the BEEFOkay so we have taken way to many support questions to date on what FTP software to use, how do I use it and is their something free. We are currently working on an easy to use FTP client, code name B.E.E.F. which stands for BlueFur Easy End-user FTP.

The FTP client is in production and will be out hopefully the first week of the new year. The software will be free for all BlueFur customers and available to download in our customer resource center.

One feature that BEEF will have is versioning. Versioning means that if you upload a new file the old file will be renamed to [filename.ext].old which you can then restore. This is useful if you uploaded the wrong file and is simple to restore by deleting the new file and renaming the backed up file w/o the .old.

We will also include a bunch of free video’s on how to use BEEF once it is done to be added to our Wiki.

Great Gadgets: Buffalo’s Extra-Speedy Flash Drive

When time is of the essence, you can’t sit there and wait while a file gets transfered between your computer and the attached USB flash drive. This becomes an even bigger issue when you ramp up to the higher capacity drives, transferring files of increasingly larger size. Many high resolution photos and high definition video files can take up a lot of room. With most flash drives, the transfer process — both to and from the thumb drive — can take over a minute. And time is money.

While their claims have not been substantiated by any objective third party, Buffalo is saying that their TurboUSB stick sends those 1s and 0s at a rate that is 20% faster than any other USB flash drive on the market. No raw numbers are provided, nor have any benchmarks been taken with the Buffalo TurboUSB, so we’ll have to take this claim with a grain of salt.

In terms of storage, this drive should have you covered too, stuffing 32 gigabytes of memory into a package that isn’t much larger than a pack of gum. No word on price, but this most certainly won’t come cheap. It’ll probably cost more than buying eight 4GB USB flash drives, but that’s the price you pay for convenience, capacity, and speed.

Weekly Discussion

I found a company called Path Intelligence that provides a new unique service…

The Path Intelligence FootPathâ„¢ system consists of a small number of discreet monitoring units installed throughout the centre…The units measure signals from the consumers’ mobile phones using unique technology that can locate a consumer’s position to within 1-2m…The FootPathâ„¢ technology is the only system available on the market today that can gather information on shopper paths…

Sounds kind of neat.

If you were to enter into these stores they would be able to track your movement through the store and then possibly compare it to your last 10 visits or that of the average visitor. A friend who is the owner of a local mall said that they would see this software working for many stores and would help them to determine where to place certain products.

The only thing I don’t like is that this is a bit of a invasion of privacy.

How would you feel knowing that a store has tracked your every movement and stored it?

There is nothing stopping non-stores from buying this and tracking you.

Does it change how you feel if it was not a store?

In The Sphere: Net Worth, DoFollow, and Old Japanese People

Published on Dec 14, 2007   //  In the Sphere

It’s Friday again, so let’s have a look at what people said this week.

Zac Johnson loves money. We all do. With the US presidential election just around the corner, we’ve been inundated with the opinions of all the candidates, but how much money do they make? How rich are these fat cats who are destined for Washington? Wonder no longer, because here are the net worths of all the presidential candidates. Obama is the poorest of the bunch with a net worth of $1.3 million.

Jennifer Mattern is a freelance business writer and she offers all sorts of freelance writing tips at her appropriately named blog All Freelance Writing. As 2008 is just around the corner, she has discovered a free 2008 writer’s calendar that you can download without paying a penny. It comes with inspirational quotes as well as notes for important tax dates for the self-employed.

Derek Semmler instituted the do-follow WordPress plug-in on his blog back in May, but now he’s reconsidering his decision. Help Derek decide whether he should revert back to NoFollow. His biggest motivation to revert is that he has been hit by a lot of “browse-by” comments, because many people drop a comment just to get a free linkback. Who can blame them?

John Chow is evil and loves to laugh at people. It should come as little surprise that he got a kick out of a certain YouTube video depicting how not to roll in your Bugatti Veyron. The Veyron is a $1-million vehicle, but the guy in the video is having a little trouble with it. Where’s the closest gas station anyways?

Nick Ramsay, you might remember him from Nice4Rice, addresses Japan’s aging population problem with an alternative solution. It’s easy to say that Japanese people should have more babies to fill out the working population, but Nick’s proposal is a little different than that.
