In The Sphere: Social Media, Secret Google Area, and Blog World

Posted on November 9th, 2007

It’s Friday again! South of the 49th parallel, people will be crowding into stores for what could be the busiest shopping day of the year, trying to rake in some exceptional deals not only for themselves, but also for the purpose of giving them away as holiday gifts. Why waste your money on a trinket when you can enjoy all sorts of fun free content in the blogosphere? Here are five posts to get you started.

Courtney Tuttle wasn’t always an Internet genius. He had to put on his slacks one leg at a time like everyone else, learning the ins and outs of this business like every other dot com mogul in the making. This week, Courtney shares five reasons why he used to suck at social media. Many blogs rely extensively on services like StumbleUpon and Digg for traffic, so this post is definitely worth a read.

Darren Barefoot is still over in Malta, but he’s starting to feel less like a fish out of water. Because of what he’s been doing lately, Darren’s had printers on the mind, so he poses the question: Where’s the iPod of printers? After all, printers haven’t changed all that much in the last ten years. We need some innovation. Is e-paper the answer?

Cash Quests has come across a rather interesting secret. While most our rankings in Google are dictated through some sort of algorithm, the people who work at the popular search engine also have the ability to manipulate search results manually. And guess what, just about anyone can access this secret Google admin area that lets you change your search rankings. Unfortunately for us, Cash Quests isn’t sharing.

Derek Semmler is a work-at-home dad, so he gets to spend a fair bit of time with his children. While he loves tossing the pigskin around with his two boys, his sons don’t seem quite as interested, effectively demoting dad to second string. Derek, you’re not the starting QB anymore.

Zac Johnson is in Las Vegas for BlogWorld Expo and he’s not shy about sharing Day 1 photos and a recap. He’s met up with superstars like John Chow and Darin Carter, but the real fun happens after the sun sets. It’s during that time that Zac gets to partake in some BlogWorld partying. Nothing quite like a blogger party, right?

I really enjoy your “Around the sphere” posts. It keeps me updated on what everyone else is doing, so I don’t have to check a million blogs everyday.

While I don’t work at home full-time, I do have a considerable amount of flexibility in my current job and that does give me the opportunity to spend a good deal of time with my kids - even if I am second string at times.

Thanks for the mention!
