Keys to Success: Avoid Bad Marketing Tricks
Posted on November 2nd, 2007
The image you portray to the public either as a store front or a web page should give your potential customers the feeling that you are doing well in business. When I see a business that does not look like it is doing well I think if they keep doing the same old thing again and again it will produce the same results.Â
How many times have you driven down the road and seen a sign that says going out of business sale?
A local business near where I live has hand painted signs on their windows that say “Going Out of Business Sale 70% Off”. Those signs have been up now for almost 3 years. I figured I would pop in to see why they still have the signs up and these amazing discounts. I was not surprised to find out that in fact that they are not closing and that all of the products that are 70% off are out of stock.
How would you feel as a potential customer at this point?
So the only purpose of the signs was to draw people in to the store. Once you get in there though there is nothing to buy at a discount. I asked him how sales have been and the owner said that they have been horrible.
What advice would you give to this store owner?

LOL, Sleepers. :P
Actually all of them that I’ve seen have those hand-written signs in the windows. One of them actually did close though, I was surprised. :P
What they should do is start to act like an actual store, not pretend to be closing, just be a store, have reasonable sales once and awhile, and do business normally… Making everything 70% off might boost sales for a few days, but not years.
What i think about the 70% Off We are Closing is that if you are really not closing and the buyer finds out then its in fact lying to a customer…..sure it will get them in the door but once they find out they might never buy from there again.
Another thing if it has been up for years ….. then really its not a sale. Sales are to be only for short amount of time , because then people will be like “i have to buy this before the sale is over”
Really they need to change there advertising.
You really need to show what the Buyers are saving , so you should always put like “30 % off”
Sales are Sales you should never have them go on for years.
If a business has a “going out of business – everything 70% off!” sign up for more than 3 or 4 weeks, I automatically think that they only have junk left, and i don’t even bother going in the store.
