Great Gadgets: HTC Shadow from T-Mobile

It seems that everyone wants more out of their cell phones these days than just a device that will handle text messages and voice calls. At the same time, people are typically turned off by the extra bulk of some larger smartphones and PDA phones on the market. That’s why most non-business consumers are less likely to consider something like a Palm Treo or a full-sized BlackBerry device. Well, here is a mobile phone that seems to walk that fine line, providing oodles of functionality in a package that is remarkably compact.

T-Mobile has just announced the availability of the HTC Shadow, based on the HTC Juno platform. This handset features a vertical slider design, but the keypad that slides out is neither numeric nor QWERTY. Instead, it has a 20-key SureType configuration that matches two letters to each button. Coupled with good predictive text software, this should be a great solution for people who want to access their e-mail and text messages on the go. It’s quite powerful too, because the HTC Shadow runs on Windows Mobile 6. However, this has been dressed up in a unique interface skin, making interaction much more user friendly.

Although the 2.6-inch color display is not a touchscreen, navigating through the menus is supposed to be quite easy with click wheel-like navigator in the center. Other features include integrated WiFi, Bluetooth A2DP, myFaves 1.5, and microSD memory card expansion. If you sign up for a voice plan, mate it with the $20/month unlimited data plan, and lock yourself down to a two year contract, the HTC Shadow can be purchased from T-Mobile for just $150. No word on whether this phone will make it to Canada.

Discussion: Where will you be shopping?

Weekly Discussion

We have seen the US and Canadian dollar be around par for awhile now but we have NOT seen Canadian stores change their prices. Even stores with both Canadian and US companies prices are very very different.

Are these stores gouging us?

I think Canadian stores are taking advantage of the situation and although they are making money now I am a little concerned. We are less then 2 months before Christmas holidays and if these stores continue to keep their current pricing model I think a lot of Canadians will be angry and seek alternative shopping.

Where are you shopping this Christmas?

I know I would prefer to shop locally but if the prices are not reflect of the actual costs I will most likely be shopping in the US or online. I think I am not the only one who feels that way and I think Canadian shop owners need to start seeing the big picture instead of the bit of cash they are making today.

Do not think about it or put it off. Your site is at risk so upgrade now.

In The Sphere: Travel Photos, BitTorrent, and a Chance to Win Halo 3 Legendary Edition

I don’t know about you, but it’s pretty a pretty crazy workweek for me. The weekend couldn’t have come any sooner, so it’s great to just sit back, relax, and soak in everything that the blogosphere has to offer. It’s time to take another whirlwind tour and here’s what I came up with for this week.

Amanda from the Thinkreferrals Blog Network is dishing out some tips on travel photography. These aren’t about how to frame your pictures or how to best make use of the lighting conditions. Instead, these are very practical tips from a logistics standpoint. Yes, logistics still apply, even while you’re sipping on wine under the Eiffel Tower, gazing in awe at the Egyptian Pyramids, or trying to figure out the subway system in Tokyo.

Ashwini Khare of WebTalks has definitively concluded that Widgetbucks outperforms Adsense. We’ve known for some time that Adsense may not necessarily be the most lucrative monetization strategy for your blog and based on Ashwini’s analysis, Widgetbucks could be worth a look. Too bad it doubles the load time of his blog.

Untwisted Vortex‘s RT Cunningham talks about the crackdown on illegal file sharing, more specifically discussing the evil BitTorrent protocol. What’s your take on the whole music and movie piracy issue? Should BitTorrent theoretically be immune to the charges, seeing how the client doesn’t actually host any of the files itself?

The Enkay Blog has an interesting proposition for you to consider. Breaking it all down, the Enkay Blog has reason to believe that John Chow is the Walmart of blogging. In his words, “Now getting to what I am trying to say, is that the top 1% of money making blogs are dulling the shine of the newcomers in the business.”

Leo Chiang is known to many people as the tattooed pilot on Battlestar Galactica, but he does a variety of other stunt and acting work as well. He’s also quite the generous bloke, because he’s more than happy to give away Halo 3 Legendary Edition on his blog. There’s less than one week left in his contest, so get in on the action and you may soon finish the fight with Master Chief.
