Great Gadgets: USB Hub Twists and Shouts

Published on Sep 24, 2007   //  Gadgets

It’s questionable whether this gadget is actually useful, but it is kind of neat to have a USB hub that can point in every which direction. On the one hand, it may help to better organize all of those cables, but on the other hand, all that twisting may just result in even more tangling.

If you’re looking for extreme features and impressive specifications, the USB 180° Revolving 4 Ports Hub from Brando is not for you. If you want a funky way to get more USB ports for your flash drives, webcams, and other peripherals, then this might work. All those Rubik’s Cube-like colors is pretty attractive too, especially if you’re the type that enjoys the bold Lego or IKEA-inspired look.

Ports 1 and 2 can be rotated up to 180 degrees and this doo-hickey supports the high-speed USB 2.0 standard for speeds up to 480Mbps. Get it here for 16 bucks.

DealDotCom WordPress Plugin – Beta 0.6

Published on Sep 23, 2007   //  DealDotCom

We have listened to your requests, suggestions and issues. With the help of several people the new plug-in has some great features worked into it. Some of these features are…

  • Locally cached version of the daily deal. This will speed up load times.
  • Manual update daily deal. If for any reason the update is delayed you can update it manually.
  • Horizontal 468 X 60 banner option.
  • DealDotCom Widget so you can add the banner to your sidebar using Widgets (this needs to be activated separately).

If you are running any prior version I urge you to upgrade. To upgrade be sure to Deactivate your plug-in, delete it and then upload the newest version.

To install the plug-in you need to…

  1. Download the DealDotCom Plugin.
  2. Unzip the file and upload to your wp-content/plugins folder.
  3. Activate the plug-in in your WordPress admin.
  4. Customize the Plug-in on the Options page.
  5. Add a bit of code to your sidebar.php file or use the Widget.

Again this script is still in Beta so use at your own risk. If you find anything wrong or any suggestion feel free to post them.

I have also posted the full script here so you can view the plug-in.

I would also like to send out a special thanks Rainer and Matt for helping with the current version.

UPDATE – I pushed out a small update on Version 0.7 to fix a border issue and the cron update.

UPDATE - The cron did not work so I have pushed out Version 0.8.

Discussion: Effectiveness of Advertising

Published on Sep 22, 2007   //  Discussion

Weekly Discussion

Today I read the paper, watch some TV, listen to the radio and visited some sites. All of these presented some type of advertising on them but if you were to ask me if any of them stick out in my mind I would say ‘no’.

Is society at the point where we have blocked out advertising?

I know my brain mentally checks right out during commercials and ads are skipped right over. I know the online community is showing a lot of growth in advertising but is the mental blocking of ads the way to follow the Internet?

In The Sphere: Marketing, Mortgages, and Funny Towels

Published on Sep 21, 2007   //  In the Sphere

It’s Friday, so that means it’s time to have a look at what people are talking about this week. We scoured the web in search of interesting blog posts and while they are plentiful, we had to narrow it down to just five. Whether you’re looking for some Internet marketing tips or a nice chuckle to start your weekend, we’ve got you covered.

Courtney Tuttle is a guy that wants to help you make money online for free. Court has some great advice in his own blog, but he also realizes that he simply cannot be the definitive source of money making information. As such, he’s hand selected the top 7 Internet mentors you can trust. Why is John Chow not on the list? Because he’s an evil panda killer, that’s why.

Darren Barefoot says that he never has a shortage of topics to blog about, but he just doesn’t have the time to write them all. As such, he’d rather spend the time reading what you have to say in the 55 more blog posts he hopes you write. There’s quite a few topic suggestions there that would certainly make for some interesting reading. Now hop to it.

Aldian Prakoso reminds us that we should definitely focus on the long tail niche. He takes a case study of a 17-year-old girl who is pulling down $70,000 a month from Adsense alone, thanks to her hugely popular site filled with free MySpace layouts for teenage girls. I guess she really understands that demographic.

Think Referrals attempts to explain the American subprime mortgage crisis to Canadians. We’ve heard about the real estate crash in the States and how so many homeowners are facing foreclosure, but what does it all mean and where did it all come from? Before you ask, no, subprime does not refer to getting a mortgage rate at less than prime.

The Bird Man’s Blog is providing the comic relief to this edition of In The Sphere, discovering a rather interesting promotional product. The Bird Man calls it the sexy towel. Who knew that some cotton stitched together with an interesting print could be prove to be so funny.
