Great Gadgets: Canon PowerShot S5 IS Digital Camera

Posted on September 10th, 2007

I’m the proud owner of a Canon PowerShot S3 IS. Although it is only six megapixels, I feel that is enough for most consumer applications, given that most of the pictures I use are for sharing with family and publishing on the web anyways. I really appreciate the super macro mode for getting in real close to the action, as well as the fantastic 12x optical zoom that allows me to take pictures of things that are far, far away. And now Canon has done one better.

The Canon PowerShot S5 IS offers several improvements over the S3 IS that it replaces (what happened to S4?). It still has the optical image stabilizer and 12x optical zoom lens, but the megapixel count has now been bumped up to 8.0 megapixels of high resolution goodness. There’s still an articulating LCD display that rotate and swivel to your needs, but they’ve bumped its size from the 2-inches on the S3 to the 2.5-incher you’ll find on the S5.

Other vital features include VGA movies at 30fps, 22 shooting modes including full manual, and up to ISO 1600. It’s also notable that there is now a hot shoe for adding selected Canon EX Speedlite external flashes. It’s compatible with a number of converter lenses as well.

Pricing will obviously vary from retailer to retailer, but I’ve seen the Canon PowerShot S5 IS selling for about $500 Canadian.
