EA Games

Stephen Fung a local BC Internet Entrepreneur is giving away the above 3 games to the BC Children’s Hospital. The thinking is that the kids at the Hospital really have nothing fun to do and this will provide them with a bit of entertainment.

On top of that Stephen is also giving away up to $100 in cash, $1 per comment left. One person will be chosen to pick a charity to donate the money to.

BlueFur and NewportBusinessMedia have both agreed to match Stephen’s donation bringing the total up to a potential $300. If you have a favorite charity then join the contest by simply leaving a post at Stephen’s site.

WordPress Wednesdays: Love for the Tabbers

Published on Jul 4, 2007   //  WordPress

Here’s an issue that I recently solved on my own blog. I’ve been a supporter of the Brian’s Threaded Comments plug-in ever since I first discovered it. This plug-in encourages more comments, because it helps streamline the discussion process, allowing readers to reply directly to a specific comment, rather than having to force their words to the bottom of the page. This makes it more like a discussion, rather than just a bunch of people talking out of turn.

A rather major problem with this plug-in, however, is that when tab users go through the different fields of the comment form — name, email address, URI, etc. — it does not tab to the “add comment” button correctly, instead sending them all the way to the top of the page. This can be very annoying and frustrating, and it can ultimately lead some readers away from your WordPress blog. And you don’t want to lose your audience over such a petty issue.

The solution is actually very simple. Bobs from Reformat This pointed me toward a post that he did a little while back. All you need to do to fix this “tab issue” is insert a little bit of text within one line of your comments.php file.

Search through that file — in WordPress, go to Presentation, then Theme Editor, then comments.php on the side — for this snippet of text:

<input onclick=”if(typeof(onAddComment) == ‘function’) { onAddComment(); } else { alert(‘ERROR:
It looks like the website administrator hasn\’t activated the Brians Threaded Comments plugin from the plugin page’); };” name=”addcommentbutton” type=”button” id=”addcommentbutton” value=”Add comment” tabindex=”5″ />

The only change that I need to make is to add tabindex=”5″ near the end, as shown above. That’s it. No new plug-in, no complex coding, no more worries. Enjoy!

Did You Know? Two Canadian Billionaires

Published on Jul 3, 2007   //  Did You Know

When people think about making big money, they typically envision huge American corporations and top dogs like Ted Turner and Bill Gates. That’s not to say that you can’t make a heck of a lot of money in Canada, though. In fact, when you look at Forbes list of the world’s top 100 billionaires, there are at least TWO Canadians among that illustrious group. This is according to the 2007 list.

Coming in at #10 with a net worth of $22.0 billion is David Thomson and his family. Officially, his full name is David Thomson, 3rd Baron Thomson of Fleet, but we’ll just call him Dave. Dave is the Chairman of the Thomson Corporation, a post that he has held since 2002. He inherited the family fortune from his father (Kenneth Thomson) died in 2006. The Thomson Corporation is comprised of five segments — Financial, Health Care, Legal, Scientific, and Tax & Accounting — and they produce a series of higher education textbooks and other reference materials. In May 2007, Thomson merged with Reuters in a deal valued at $17.2 billion. Thomson will take 70% control of the new company, but the head will be Tom Glocer, the current head of Reuters.

The other Canadian billionaire who made the top 100 list is Galen Weston of Associated British Foods. Much like Dave above, Galen has one of a really long full name too: Willard Gordon Galen Weston, OC, OOnt. It seems like the prerequisite to being a world billionaire is having a lengthy name and a storied heritage. Weston is the grandson of George Weston, founder of the George Weston Bakeries Limited. You might also know the Weston name through the family’s vested interest in Loblaws, Holt Renfrew, and Selfridges. Although Galen is Canadian, he has considerable interests in the United Kingdom. In 1990, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.

New Trends in Blogging – Group Writing Projects

Business Goals

I have noticed more and more blogs starting to hold group writing projects. I first noticed this at Problogger and have started to notice it happen more and more on other sites.

One reason you may want to start a group writing project is most people link to that project as part of the post creating one way links to that post. Another reason is to help you grow your community and develop how people interact with your community. If you have a group of 50 or more regulars that visit your blog then I would suggest giving a group writing project a try.

If you are wondering why you should participate in a group writing project the main reason is you will gain some traffic back from the main site linking back to your own.

Have you run a group writing project on your own site? Do you think a group writing project work on this site?
