Techvibes Sold to Rob Lewis

Published on May 2, 2007   //  News Worthy

Techvibes LogoI just received a note telling me that Techvibes has been sold and that the new owner is Rob Lewis.

Techvibes is a site dedicated to helping bring technical people together in Vancouver to network.  The site was left unmanaged for a while and became over run by spammers.  A core group of Techvibes forum members broke off sometime ago and started Tazzu, which is still alive today and doing very well.

If you’re wondering, as I was, who this Rob Lewis guy is, here are a few details about him:

  • President of Techvibes Media Inc.
  • Co-Founder of TheCommonFan.com
  • Former Marketing Director of Webnames
  • The real question on everyone’s mindsis, what are Rob’s plans for the future of Techvibes.  In it’s heyday Techvibes had 500+ people attending monthly networking functions and 20-30 posts a day on their forum.

What do you think Rob should do with it?

I hope that Rob will consider working with Tazzu to rebuild the Vancouver tech network that is sorely missing in our community.

Update -  I reported the wrong person as buying this. Rob informed me the owners are Boris Wertz (COO of AbeBooks) and Geoff Hampson (former CEO of Peer 1) .

    Silverlight Hosting?

Silverlight LogoToday it was announced that Microsoft has launched a new software called Silverlight.

There is a lot of hype around this at the various tech sites and after testing it myself this software does look cool. After playing with it for a bit you will see that Silverlight blows Adobe Flex out of the water.

You can download the various Runtime and Tools at the Silverlight download site.

The software is sever independent so you can use it on any hosting platform. If you are using the WMS streaming features then you will need a Windows streaming server.

    Promote Phish Phinder

Published on May 1, 2007   //  Phish Phinder

Phish PhinderAs most of you know we have released Phish Phinder to the public and there are already around 100 downloads or so.

When it comes to free software there are a few ways we promote it. Here is what we have done so far.

    1. Create a PAD file and upload it to the various software sites.
    2. Upload the software to Tucows and Download.com.
    3. Order a Press Release (should be out next week).
    4. Contact several of the large Phishing groups to ask them to test it.

We did submit it to the 2 largest software download sites but it will take almost a year for Tucows and Download.com to approve it. This surprised me and I was a little disappointed by the length of wait.

How would you promote this if you were wanting to get more people to download it?
