Blog Digest ScriptWe have been looking for a reliable Blog Digest Script that we could send out to our customers in order to keep them up to date on what’s new in our business. We know not everyone likes or knows how to use RSS. We also know that not everyone has the time to visit the blog on a daily basis.

We tested a few scripts that claim to be Blog Digests but none of them worked how we wanted them to.  So we decided to make our own and have completed it today.  We have made it available to you to integrate into your own sites and blogs.

Did You Know: The Small Business Exemption

Published on May 22, 2007   //  Did You Know

Here’s a useful tip for any Canadian small businesses out there. If you’re running a small business on the side, be it selling trinkets online or running a tutoring service, you do not need to register for GST if you take in less than $30,000 per year. Something that you have to bear in mind, though, is that this $30,000 cut off is for all monies received and not net income. So, if you’re in the business of selling something with relatively small margins, the $30,000 can sneak up on you rather easily, even if you only net a few thousand.

This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t register for GST, because there are certain advantages. For example, for any expenses that you accrue as part of running your business, you can receive a portion of the GST paid on this items/services back when you file your own GST. And getting money back from the government is always welcome, right?

Great Gadgets: Nokia E90 Communicator

As a mobile professional, it can be hard to decide whether to carry around a compact cell phone or a bulkier PDA style phone. On the one hand, you don’t want to have to lug around something that’s bigger than it needs to be, but at the same time, PDA style phones typically offer better mobile email usability and functionality.

Nokia, the world leader in mobile phones, is set to launch a device that caters to both ends of that market. The Nokia E90 Communicator looks like a fairly conventional candybar-style handset at first glance, but the interesting thing about it is that you can open it like a book, revealing a mini-laptop form factor complete with a super widescreen display. The initial launch will be in Europe, but it will be available in Canada through importers like Expansys.

Key features include a 3.2 megapixel camera, QWERTY keyboard, quad-band GSM radios, Bluetooth, WiFi, Symbian OS Version 9.2, microSD expansion, Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email, Quickoffice, instant messaging, text-to-speech message reader, and an integrated multimedia player. This is one crazy phone, so it’ll probably be quite expensive, getting close to the $1k mark in Canadian dollars. On a related note, the first unit was sold at a charity auction for US$5000 in Jakarta, Indonesia earlier this month.

  2. What computer maker opened a customer contact center in Edmonton in 2004?
  3. What Alberta based Telco started in 1990?
  4. What Edmonton based company makes Web TimeSheet?
  5. What Calgary based group is Kin Wong the president of?

Discussion: Posting Kids Pictures Online?

Published on May 19, 2007   //  Discussion

Weekly Discussion

This week on a another forum a hot debate started over a CBC Radio show, where listeners were warned not to post pictures of their kids online as their kids’ photos could be used by pedophiles.  Parents flocked to the forum to warn others not to post pictures and to spread the word that posting your child’s photo is not only dangerous but foolish.  The majority of the parents agreed and felt the risk of a pedaphile taking their pictures and possibly editing or manipulating them into something perverse was just too great and they could no longer in good conscience post pictures in a public forum.

I did a little  bit of research into the topic and believe that the CBC Radio show was creating propaganda and fear. Let’s look at it from a numbers point of view. There are approximately 600,000 pedophiles in North America. Pedophiles currently make up 0.1% of our population in North America. That means that if you were to follow the advice of CBC Radio, you would change your online behaviour and no longer accommodate the majority of viewers of your children’s pictures (family members and friends) and live in fear that one of those 0.1% may stumble across a picture of your child.

Looking at Google Image for the word Kids brings up over 24 million results. In my opinion there is a very slim chance that a pedophile will find your child’s photo in those results.

Now for those of you who still live in fear of those 0.1% of the population, but still want to post your children’s pictures, you can ensure that your images are not included into Google Images.  Google provides the resources to remove them from their site.

Believe me, as a father of 2 children, I do not approve of pedophilia.  This post is not in favour of allowing them to do what they do. I just choose not to live in fear.

How about you do you post your children’s pictures on the Internet?
