Did You Know? John Chow Lived Near the Downtown East Side

Published on May 29, 2007   //  Did You Know

Readers who live in Vancouver are probably all too familiar with the term “downtown east side”, but for those of you reading from elsewhere in the country (or world), it likely has no meaning. Well, Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside is known as being one of the poorest postal codes in the country, specifically at the intersection of Main and Hastings. There are many challenges in the area — poverty, drug addiction, prostitution, and so on — but the neighbourhood isn’t without hope.

Take self-proclaimed dot com mogul John Chow, for example. He grew up in Strathcona, a neighbourhood that is immediately adjacent to Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Needless to say, the influence of the neighbourhood next door is fairly significant. Despite this (or even because of this), John Chow developed a strong work ethic that sticks with him today. He knew that the only way that he could ever succeed was through his own hard work and dedication.

Today, John Chow runs a personal blog where he shares his money-making strategies. That blog makes in excess of $12,000 a month. What’s more, John also runs The TechZone, a technology site that reviews computer hardware and other components. Believe me, he’s doing much better than someone flipping burgers at the golden arches. And all it took was passion, dedication, and a little elbow grease.

It goes to show you that anyone can succeed in life, even if you come from an immigrant family, a troubled neighbourhood, or have horrible grammar like Chow.

Score Card on the CIRA Board and how DotCa Savvy they are

Published on May 28, 2007   //  News Worthy

CIRA LogoJay over at DomainTools Blog did a great post on how ICANN scored on being DotCom Savvy with owning there own names with a  .com at the end. The ICANN board scored an overall  D which is not very good.  This got me wondering how our own CIRA board would do if I we were to apply the same standards.

Here is a list of the full names of the 2006 CIRA board members and if there full name is owned or not with a .ca domain…

 Ricard Anderson – Owned
Clyde Beattie – Owned
Annette Cyr – Available
John Demco – Owned
Robert Ford – Available
Angie Forte – Available
Christopher Goodfellow – Available
Ron Kawchuk – Available
Lynne Mackan-Roy – Available
Ross Rader – Available
Bill Reid – Owned
Jeff Rybak – Owned
Debi Rosati – Available
Bernard Turcotte – Owned

Of all the members 6 of the 14 are owned. This would give them a 42% score or an F.

I am not in anyway saying they need to rush out and buy them but one way they could promote the .ca is to actually owned their own name as a .ca. What do you think?

Great Gadgets: Medion UMPC with Slide-Out QWERTY Keyboard

Published on May 28, 2007   //  Gadgets

Fitting somewhere between your PDA phone and your business laptop is this ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) from Medion. It won’t anywhere near as powerful as a regular notebook computer, but because it sports a 6.5-inch touchscreen display, it’s a heck of a lot more portable. Think of it as a Tablet PC that got stuck in the dryer.

Great for mobile professionals, the Medion UMPC is powered by a 1GHz processor, 30GB hard drive, and even a DVB-T tuner for entertainment on the go (not that you should be watching TV while in that important meeting). The trio of wireless radios — Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11b/g WiFi, and integrated GPS — will surely come in handy too. It’s even got a built-in webcam!

Discussion: Could Google be Evil?

Published on May 26, 2007   //  Discussion

Weekly Discussion

For years we have all heard that Microsoft is considered a company that is evil  and to fear the power of Mr. Gates. Personally, I never bought it, but that’s another discussion all together. Recently it occurred to me that if any company could in future become “evil” it would be Google.

If your scratching your head wondering why,  maybe reading this excerpt from the  Google CEO will help explain it…

“We are very early in the total information we have within Google… The goal is to enable Google users to be able to ask the question such as ‘What shall I do tomorrow?.”

For Google to realistically answer that question, they’d need a massive amount of personal information stored about me. They are spinning it to sound like that information would be used for your benefit in the article above, but how likely is it that the information they store could be used in a bad way?

I believe that no company or organisation should have that much information on you. It also concerns me that Google does not give you the option to view what information it has compiled.  I do believe there is room for that information to be used in a harmful way if not regulated.

Many visionaries have written books and movies about the coming of an evil ‘Big Brother‘ type corporation. Will Google be that company?

I feel that Google should stick to it’s core competency of being a good search engine for finding information on the web. What do you think?
