Wikipedia defines PageRank (PR) as…

PageRank is a link analysis algorithm that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of “measuring” its relative importance within the set.

If you use the Google Toolbar as I am sure most of you do you will see a little PageRank icon when you visit a site.

Does a sites PageRank effect your buying decision to buy?

We currently have a PR of 0 but I am going to predict that we will be at a PR of 5 when the next PR release is completed. It should be coming very soon if you are also waiting.

I think our current 0 PR has affected some peoples buying decision negatively, but but since I can’t survey non-customers, it’s difficult to know for sure.

I do know that a PR does affect my buying decision. How about you?

I will also make a few predictions on what the new PR will be for the following 3 top bloggers.

Problogger.net
Current PR 7
New PR 6

Shoemoney.com
Current PR 6
New PR 6

JohnChow.com
Current PR 4
New PR 6

Any predictions on your PR after the update?

  • I don’t think it affects my buying decision… To me, I think PageRank is sorta important, but it is just a silly little measure of, basically, how many backlinks you have. Of course, PageRank is good, because the higher your PageRank is, the higher up in Google Results you’ll be. Which is not an aspect of a buying decision (although, it is an aspect of finding the site to buy from).

Personally, I don’t buy a lot over the Internet right now (although I do think the Internet is a good place for buying stuff). And when I do buy stuff over the Internet, it’s really only from sites I trust, and I don’t really consider PageRank in that.

As for my PageRank prediction, I think that my blog (Matt’s Blog) will go from a PageRank of 0, to a PageRank of 1 or 2.

iWebTool’s PageRank Prediction says that’ll I’ll get a PageRank of 3, and BlueFur will get a PageRank of 5.

  • Actually, this tool says I have a PageRank of 4 on some Google servers. Awesome, jumped 4 spots in the 4 months my blog has been active for. :D

It also says that BlueFur has a PageRank of 5 on some Google servers.

  • I don’t really care about PageRank, and it sure doesn’t affect my buying habits. I have it on display, but it seems to average around 5 or 6 for most of the websites I visit.

  • Brand affects buying decision for sure. The question is how accurate Google “page rank” reflects the brand value. My understaning is that PageRank is determined not only by the number of backlinks, but also page ranks of these links as well.

Since Google has the highest brand value himself (more than $10 billion) I conclude two things:
    1. Page rank and brand value is not far off.
    2. Google algorithm is predominant right now for determining the brand value (that’s why they scored that high themselves).

Which one of the conclusion is truer the time will tell, but Google searches are of a high quality for sure, which means they can position the page within its niche market (“context”) adequately well.
