Congratulations to this weeks geek Rainer from Thinkreferrals. This weeks questions are tech but also Earth Day related:
- What uses more energy leaving your PC on for 16 hours or turning it off and on?
- How much energy would be saved if Google were to use a black colour scheme?
- How much power does a PowerPC 970FX use?
- What does the hibernate feature do in Windows?
- What yearly event does Dell have on April 22?

1. Well, if you put your computer into hibernate or sleep, it’ll pretty much use the same amount of energy as if it was off. Except, it’ll use a little more energy in hibernate or sleep, because the monitor will still use a little bit of power. On a shutdown computer, the monitor uses no energy (other than to power the little light by the power button to show that it’s “off”. But, if you have your PC on for 16 hours without hibernation or sleep, than turning off your PC will use less energy. Of course, completely unplugging your computer will use no energy, but that’s almost a waste of time.
2. 8.5 Megawatt-hours per day.
3. 11 watts at 1GHz and 48 watts at 2GHz.
4. Takes everything currently stored in RAM, and puts it on the hard drive. When booted back up, it puts all that stuff back into the RAM.
5. A free computer recycling event.
