Discussion: Violence in Schools?

Weekly Discussion

Unless you live under a rock you have probably heard of the Virgina Tech massacre that occurred this week. All of our staff send our condolences to the families and friends of those killed or injured. This is another example of violence in the school system that has been growing more and more prevalent in the last 10 years.

From Columbine to Dawson College we have seen these violent acts transpire at different geographical locations committed by a vast diversity of people. There are no obvious clues as to where or when this will happen again.  No telltale sign as to who will cross the line and who is simply spewing harmless nonesense.

I have a gut feeling though, that something has changed in our society in the last 10 years that has brought on this violence in our schools. What it is, I haven’t figured it out.

What do you think the cause is? What do you think can be done to fix this?

  • I don’t think that this is something that changed too recently: some school shootings happened almost 50 years ago, after all.

  • That is true but they were few and far between.

  • Lack of values, increased competitiveness without a need to create, consumerism,”I do not care” attitude,
“I have nothing to do”, substance abuse, weak family and community ties, religion institutes crisis,
violence on TV, easy access to guns, inability to solve conflicts, cultural differences, poverty,
    homelessness..

  • “weak family and community ties”

I think is the biggest one.

I remember being young and growing up in a very tight and caring community, if i did something bad either the person i didnt know would let me know, or they would find out who my parents were and tell them.

I find now that if someone does something bad then people turn the other way to not get involved and have the mentality… ah the cops will deal with them.

Now being all grown up, if im at a bar having my fun and i see someone getting beat up ill go and try to break it up, when ill my friends say…. no dont get involved.

I even see old people laying on the floor hurt because they slipped on ice… people just drive on by because they are to “busy” with getting to work…etc…

At the end of the day…. if you have a group of people that dont care about each other.. then its alot easier to rip them off. But if you have a group of people that care for each other.. then good luck trying to rip one off.
