This weeks discussion topic is should anti-phishing organizations be allowed to Spam for educational purposes?Â
I was reading this article at the PC World Website. They detail that in 2006 Phishing is up 709% since 2005. Also I believe the number will rise again in 2007. It is my belief that the only way to combat this is to educate end users. An interesting discuss came up that what would happen if anti-phishing organizations were allowed to send out one spam email to educate the masses.
Believe me I hate spam probably even more then you do. I do not want to see another spam email. I believe that each business that provides access to the Internet (ISP) should send out some type of educational letter, email, video or commercial to educate the masses to there own users.
What do you think? How would you stop phishing?

Would it really be called SPAM, though, if ISPs sent out an Information Email? I don’t think so. But, I think that ISPs should send out 1 email to all New Customers out Phishing, and 1 email to all Existing customers. They should also post information and the like on their website, and post a link to it on the Front Page. They should also make recommendations on how to prevent Phishing Attacks. Such as upgrading/switching to Browsers that have anti-phishing filters (such as IE7 and FF2) and how to enable them. Maybe ISPs should also send something in the mail occasionally about Phishing. Or, possibly print something like “Phishing Sites Are Everywhere, To Find More About Them, And How To Protect Yourself, Go to http://www.example.com/phishing/” on mailed Bills, and likewise on “e-bills”.
Lots of people should be informing other people about Phishing, maybe even search engines, hosting providers (maybe BlueFur should add something to the Newsletter?), email providers, etc.

I think this is a topic that should be posted on ALL blogs. I have just posted an article in my blog about it and I hope others do the same. If everybody does their part, this really can be fixed with education.

I think that ISP’s should give out information on phishing, as any information could be quite beneficial to the public. Furthermore, it is vital that users inform companies immediately when they come across possible phishing scams. It is our responsibility as users of the internet. Thanks.

I agree. All internet users have the responsibility of informing other users and businesses of suspected phishing scams. Taking an active role can help fight this dangerous form of cyber crime. Take care.
