Geek of the Week

We are adding another new feature to the blog. Each week (on Sunday) we will post a list of 5 questions. Answer the 5 questions in the comments and a winner will be selected from whoever has the most correct answers on the following Sunday. The winner will receive a free link back to there site or blog. At the end of the year we will award the Geek of the Year a cash prize and trophy. To win Geek of the Year you will need to win the most Geek of the Week’s throughout that year.

Here are the first 5 questions and good luck:

  1. What does the Acronym RAID stand for?
  2. What type of wire is used for telephones?
  3. What does the grep command do?
  4. What command would you use to edit your Windows Registry?
  5. The Apple Lisa was named after who?

Discussion: To allow nofollow or not?

Weekly Discussion

Last weeks discussion was great. This week we open the discussion with should you allow nofollow on your blog or not?

It is a widely known SEO fact that if you have a website you should limit the number of outbound links to other sites. This leaks your Google Page Rank (PR) from your site to other sites. To stop this leak you can add rel=”nofollow” to your links.

If you have a link on a blog or in a forum post most likely that link has a nofollow tag in it.

I believe that the nofollow is something that you should use on your site if you are not getting paid for the link. What do you think?

Are You Ready For Daylight Savings Time?

Published on Feb 16, 2007   //  News Worthy

Vancouver Steam ClockAs most of you may not have known this year Daylight Savings Time has change from the 1st Sunday in April to the 2nd Sunday in March. That means that March 11, 2007 that your clock will have to move forward, a whole 3 weeks early.

This is not a prank. You can see the CBC report on this.

What does this mean to hosting and maybe the techies? Well anything that is dependant on time probably needs a patch. All the major Operating Systems have posted a patch for the new Daylight Savings Time. You should visit your Operating System company site to ensure your own system is patched before March 11th:

All of our servers are already patched for this so there is no worries for BlueFur.com customers. Be sure to check with your various providers and work to be sure you are 100% ready for this.

PS – Thanks Matt

I was reading an article over at TechCruch about a company named BubblePLY. The article sparked me to go and investigate what it is they do.

So BubblePLY is a fun, free little tool that lets you put Bubbles (you know those thought bubbles) into any move. All you need to do is insert a link from a video say from YouTube.com and your on your way to adding your own bubbles. You can add various bubbles, comments or side notes into a video. If you don’t have a video then you could have one made by NewportBusinessMedia.

Here is our attempt with it…

Google Changes to Googe?

Published on Feb 14, 2007   //  News Worthy

Googe LogoI am sure most of you went to Google today and saw the new logo (left) and of course you knew it was the Google logo but when you look at it long enough it looks more like Googe. It makes you wonder just what Googe could be. It also made me wonder if they would have been as successful if there name was Googe instead of Google.

All of us here at BlueFur.com wish you a Happy Valentines.

BlueFur goes Green

Green Hosting

No it wasn’t anything we ate! In 2007 we are committed to becoming more environmentally friendly. The current most damaging thing we use is Energy which gives off excessive carbon into the Earths atmosphere. This is what is referred to more commonly as global warming.

At BlueFur.com we believe it is every business owners responsibility to be as active in preventing global catastrophes. If you watch the movie An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore you will quickly learn that global warming is not something that will take 1000′s of years but can cause major damage in less then 50 years. If you believe the movie or facts is really up to you.

As we can not stop using Energy for our servers we will begin a Carbon Neutral program that will plant a new tree for each server a year. This will result in many trees being planted and more planted each year to balance off the amount of Carbon released into the atmosphere.

We hope that our efforts here will inspire you to determine how much damage your business is doing and look for ways to offset it or eliminate it.
